Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Adams School of Dentistry, established in 1950 and made possible by an Act of the North Carolina General Assembly in 1949, is now part of a dynamic Health Science campus! The school provides oral health care to more than 90,000 patients each year and provides additional in-kind services totaling more than $3.6M annually through four student-led free dental clinics and other charitable care events. With more than 6,400 living alumni in 27 nations and all 50 states, the school's impact to oral health in North Carolina, throughout the U.S., and around the world is unprecedented. Adams School of Dentistry is at the forefront of oral health care, education, research and leadership. The Adams School of Dentistry is one of six health science schools (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Public Health) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the first dental school in the state of North Carolina. The
ASOD consists of seven (7) Academic Departments: Biomedical Sciences, Craniofacial and Surgical Care (Craniofacial Center, Geriatrics/Special Care, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Oral Medicine), Restorative Sciences (General Dentistry, Operative & Biomaterials and Prosthodontics), Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health, Orthodontics, Diagnostic Sciences (Oral Microbiology, Orofacial Pain/Sleep, Pathology and Radiology) and Periodontology, Endodontics and Dental Hygiene (one department). Currently the
ASOD has 1,077 incumbents, filling 589 faculty positions (412 non-paid adjunct status, 177 in-pay status), 83 fellow positions, 33 post-doc positions, 42
EHRA-NF positions, 283
SHRA positions and 47

Many of the school's administrative departments are led by the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration - this oversight includes Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Support Services/Facilities, Patient Accounts and Dental Faculty Practice.

Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Human Resources Specialist serves as one part of a two part HR Business Partner team, functioning as a generalist for assigned departments, divisions, and or offices and provides a broad range of services, advice, guidance, and counsel on a variety of HR matters to include, but not limited to, recruitment and selection, classification and compensation, leave administration, time reporting/payroll, performance management, position management, new employee orientation and onboarding, successful offboarding/transitioning, student and temporary employment, reporting and compliance, employee files, processing background checks and I-9s, data maintenance, processing sign-on and retention bonus payments, working with
ISSS on the initial and the renewal of Visas process, and assisting the HR Business Partner (Consultants) on your team when needed. This position works proactively to anticipate current and future business needs for its assigned units and provide expertise and guidance on how to navigate complex HR issues to mitigate risks.
The Human Resources Specialist will facilitate matters effectively and efficiently, and will plan, organize and prioritize to ensure that tasks are completed timely and accurately. This role will be expected to establish and foster productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders; collaborate with other members of the team to recommend and implement solutions to streamline office operations; manage special projects; proactively seek effective solutions to existing and potential human resources concerns; advise managers on best practices and any potential risks.
We are seeking high-energy, dynamic HR Specialists to help drive change in practices and procedures throughout the school, with guidance from
ASOD HR Leadership. Creating and maintaining sustainable, best practices for the
ASOD are paramount. A new HR Organizational Design has been created, and the
HRBP teams include positions of trust, which are vital to bridge the communication and training between units and HR. This new design will help lead this very exciting and impactful change for the Adams School of Dentistry and for the HR Department and is a tremendous professional opportunity to partner with the team to build something extraordinary together! |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Successful candidates will demonstrate a high degree of autonomy, discretion, and independent judgement. Demonstrated experience with policy interpretation, education, and guidance to managers and employees, and ensuring policies and procedures are in line with best practices. This role requires excellent customer service skills, knowledge of Federal and State regulations, and the ability to implement solutions that meet organizational unit needs. |
