Overview:

The PASS Medical Assistant is responsible for supporting the Pre-Anesthesia Screening Service by preparing patients for anesthesia. This includes gathering comprehensive medical histories, conducting preliminary health assessments, and ensuring all necessary documentation is completed prior to surgical procedures. The role requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Scope

Under direct supervision, assists physicians and clinicians with pre-anesthesia patient care duties in a clinical environment. Promotes efficient patient flow and patient care, i.e. exams, and procedures. Performs clinic support tasks including miscellaneous clerical tasks, answering phones, and maintaining physician's schedule. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.


Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONISIBLITIES:

  1. Pre-Anesthesia Preparation:

- Conduct thorough pre-anesthesia screenings, including obtaining medical histories and current medication lists from patients.

- Assist in identifying any potential anesthesia-related risks or issues by reviewing patient records and communicating findings to the anesthesia team.

  1. Patient Interaction:

- Serve as a point of contact for patients undergoing pre-anesthesia assessment, providing them with information and addressing any questions or concerns.

- Ensure patient comfort and confidentiality throughout the screening process.

  1. Documentation and Record Keeping:

- Accurately document patient information and screening results in electronic health records (EHR).

- Ensure all necessary pre-operative documentation and consents are completed and filed appropriately.

  1. Collaboration and Communication:

- Work closely with anesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care.

- Communicate any patient concerns or abnormal findings to the appropriate medical staff promptly.

  1. Administrative Support:

- Schedule and coordinate pre-anesthesia appointments, ensuring efficient use of resources and time.

- Assist in maintaining inventory of necessary supplies and equipment for the screening process.

  1. Compliance and Safety:

- Adhere to all healthcare facility policies and procedures, as well as legal and ethical standards.

- Maintain a clean and safe environment for both patients and staff.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification required.

- Prior experience in a medical or healthcare setting, preferably in anesthesia or surgical services.

- Strong knowledge of medical terminology and pre-operative procedures.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

- Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) and other healthcare software.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

- CPR/BLS certification preferred.

Working Conditions:

- Primarily works in a clinical environment within a hospital or surgical center.

- May require occasional evening or weekend shifts depending on the facility's schedule.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.

- Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for patient care tasks and computer use.
