Process Design Engineer


Position Summary


Kennedy Jenks (KJ) is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Process Design Engineer to join our growing team. In this role, you'll collaborate with multidisciplinary experts to design and deliver reliable, efficient, and sustainable process and facility solutions for industrial, environmental, and municipal clients. From advancing water reuse and treatment technologies to optimizing complex infrastructure systems, you'll play a key role in projects that protect resources, improve operations, and create lasting community impact.


Key Responsibilities




  • Partner with project managers, engineers, KJ technical services, and contractors to plan, design, and deliver innovative industrial and process infrastructure solutions.






  • Evaluate facilities through detailed site assessments and provide strategic recommendations that drive smarter improvements, efficient upgrades, and sustainable new construction.






  • Perform bench and pilot testing to validate chemical process designs and support technical decision-making.






  • Prepare high-quality engineering deliverables, including calculations, drawings, and specifications.






  • Contribute to the design of utilities, water/wastewater treatment systems, and process piping (including chemical systems and pumped industrial wastewater).






  • Analyze and compare options for equipment selection, system sizing, layouts, and water/mass balance calculations to ensure efficiency and reliability.






  • Participate in client meetings, proposals, and business development efforts, helping showcase KJ's technical expertise and client-first approach.




Qualifications




  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental, or Civil Engineering (or related discipline).






  • 3-7 years of relevant experience in process design engineering and/or industrial water/wastewater treatment plant design (consulting experience preferred).






  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Fundamentals of Engineering (FE), or Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, or willingness to obtain within one year of hire.






  • Hands-on experience with process systems, utilities, pilot testing, and regulatory compliance.






  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, REVIT, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office tools preferred.






  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.






  • Flexibility to travel to client sites and other KJ offices as needed.

Work Locations: Portland, OR * Federal Way, WA * Sacramento, CA

Salary Range: $85,000 - $125,000 (based on education, experience, qualifications, licensure/certifications, and geographic location). Eligible for performance bonus compensation.
