Job Summary

Provides primary health care to a specific patient population within the guidelines of written protocols. Follows established nursing standards, procedures, and practices. The Nocturnist Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works independently, as well as collaboratively, to diagnose, prescribe treatment, manage and evaluate patient care. While working closely with division physicians, APPs will be expected to operate with substantial clinical autonomy within the scope of practice defined by the specialty certification and a collaborative practice agreement. Candidates should be familiar with the provision of inpatient care and proficient in intensive care medicine.The Nocturnist position specifically applies to evening and night shifts. The expected schedule for a nocturnist APP would be three 13-hour shifts per week. The general responsibilities will involve providing care for admissions to the intensive care unit, performing bedside procedures, and coverage of patients in the intensive care unit. Job Description
  • Provides direct patient care to include obtaining patient history, performing patient assessment via observation, interview and examination; orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic studies; performs preventative health assessments, screening, immunizations and care; provides direct treatment and management of acute and chronic disease conditions; develops and implements patient-centered plan of care in collaboration with physicians, patients, consultants, nurses, ancillary care providers, and others as appropriate to the patient's condition.
  • Manages health conditions via prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers or community resources; may perform diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification and state regulations.
  • Performs all charting, summaries, correspondence and assorted paperwork that is required for purposes of documenting care and billing.
  • Provides counseling and education of patients and their families/caregivers concerning diagnostic tests, treatment options, disease etiology and prognosis, preventative health, and community resources.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with established clinic/hospital standards.
  • Works in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Regularly participates in constant quality improvement and process improvement activities centered on the goal of providing exceptional, evidence-based patient care.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
Required Qualifications:
  • Acute Care APRN/PA licensure and certification from appropriate certifying body
  • Basic Life Support certification (Online Basic Life Support certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the Basic Life Support requirement).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (Online Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the Advanced Cardiac Life Support requirement).

Supervisory/Management Responsibility

This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Requirements

Master's Degree in Nursing; Nurse Practitioner Degree Emphasis or Program Certificate equivalent.

  • South Carolina Official Recognition Nurse Practitioner - NLNP
  • Prescriptive Authority South Carolina Nursing License
  • South Carolina Controlled Substance license; Federal DEA license
