Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB is seeking an entry-level Transit Planner to join our Transit and Rail Planning team in North Carolina. This position is ideal for someone passionate about enhancing transportation systems and improving mobility within communities. As a key member of our team, you will contribute to a variety of transit and rail planning projects, including long-range planning, bicycle and pedestrian safety, small area development, and public transit improvements. Your role will involve analyzing and interpreting data, creating compelling maps and visual reports, and supporting transit agencies in navigating complex challenges. With opportunities to collaborate with clients across North Carolina and the Mid-Atlantic, this is a chance to grow as a transit planning expert while contributing to projects that enhance multimodal transportation solutions and improve quality of life for communities.

Responsibilities:

    Perform analysis tasks using Excel and/or GIS for a wide range of transit and rail projects.
  • Develop mapping and graphical concepts to communicate ideas to clients and stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical reports, including Transit Development Plans and other planning documents.
  • Present analysis findings in client and public meetings, offering clear insights and solutions.
  • Participate in data collection efforts, including bus stop inventories and other transit-related activities.
  • Develop methodologies for analyzing large datasets to inform transit planning and decision-making.
  • Stay informed on transit funding and policies to guide project development and planning.
  • Collaborate effectively with a multi-disciplinary team to achieve project goals and deliver high-quality outcomes.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong interest in long-term transit planning and improving multimodal transportation systems.
  • One or more years working in the transit planning field as well as transit agency experience
  • Proficient in GIS software (ArcGIS) for mapmaking, spatial analysis, and data visualization.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills, with the ability to create clear, concise reports and presentations.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically about transportation challenges.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Familiar with virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom and Teams.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with clients and team members.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritizing effectively and managing deadlines.
  • Comfortable working both collaboratively and independently in a hybrid work environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 0 - 1+ years' experience in transit/transportation planning and/or operations
  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning or a related field; Master's degree preferred
  • Working knowledge of Esri ArcGIS software
