Salary Range Starting At: $43,888

Job Description:

As the Divisional Volunteer Coordinator, you will be responsible for recruiting, training, supervising, and fostering relationships with volunteers in support of division-wide events for fundraising and awareness efforts in Indiana. The position will ensure that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

What You Will Do:



  • Maintain the volunteer database (Better Impact) accounts for all Indiana units, ensure that the correct personnel are connected to each Better Impact account, and train new officers and employees on the platform.
  • Recruit, train, and retain volunteers to meet needs for a variety of Indiana events, including Coats for Kids, Angel Trees, Toy Shops, National Donut Days, Red Shield Symposiums, Gift of Warmth events, etc.
  • Connect businesses, churches, and organizations to local volunteer opportunities and coordinate groups for corporate/organizational days of service at local units.
  • Promote volunteerism across Indiana through regular consultation with corps officers, administrators, and staff.
  • Provide annual training to local units on the Better Impact/Golden platform and regularly communicate best practices for volunteer recruitment and stewardship.
  • Maintain current list of volunteer needs at Indiana corps and DHQ to readily share with local volunteers and organizations seeking opportunities.
  • Connect inquiring volunteers with appropriate local corps units to onboard and schedule volunteer opportunities.
  • Use Better Impact software to create and send regular email communication with volunteer base regarding events, volunteer needs, holidays, volunteer birthdays and anniversaries, etc.
  • Post state-wide volunteer opportunities in Better Impact/Golden and other volunteer information sites.
  • Process volunteer onboarding paperwork for new volunteers in Indiana, including Sterling background checks, applications, and additional contracts when necessary.

    • Maintain the training schedule on the divisional calendar as well as the resources on Teams.
    • Coordinate with divisional trainers to ensure training opportunities are available for all employees and volunteers.
    • Provide regional trainings.


  • Other tasks as assigned by leadership.


Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: High School Diploma required; BA or BS degree preferred.

Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: Experience in planning, facilitating, and directing volunteer activities and special events.

Certifications: Must have a valid driver's license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver's qualification standard; must complete Safe from Harm training within the first 90 days of employment; must complete training in Turbo Stats and Better Impact within the first 30 days of employment; must complete Introduction in Emergency Disaster Training within the first 60 days of employment. Meet all Department of Transportation requirements to operate Salvation Army vehicles to be completed within the first 60 days of employment.

Skills/Abilities:



  • Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems.
  • The Volunteer Coordinator must be both people- and business- oriented, able to do multiple tasks, and capable of managing multiple volunteers at one time. Familiarity with community organizations and civic groups; marketing skills; ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups; energetic and flexible; enthusiastic in spreading The Salvation Army's mission.


Supervisory Responsibility: Supervise volunteers at various events as requested by local leadership.

Physical Requirements Include:



  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity

Travel: Extensive travel across state of Indiana required.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office environment; may require some weekend and evening work; special events are often off-site and can be both indoor and outdoor.
