DESCRIPTION

This laboratory studies mechanisms of asthma and allergy with a view to novel therapeutic development. Experiments are performed independently and as part of a team.

Under supervision the incumbent will perform laboratory bench experiments related to studies in mouse models of asthma using different strains of knockout mice. The incumbent will sensitize and allergen challenge mice, process lungs and tissues for immunohistochemistry and image analysis, capture and quantitate lung images on image analysis computer program, and measure proteins in lung by FACS, ELISA and RT-PCR. Under close supervision, will perform minor surgery to measure pulmonary function on anesthetized mice. Use aseptic technique for tissue culture. Will be responsible for mouse breeding colony management (genotyping), ordering mice, chemicals and reagents. Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge of a life science as is typically required by a Bachelor's Degree in a field related of research such as animal physiology, biology, molecular biology, immunology, and biochemistry.

  • Demonstrated experience working with mice; mouse asthma models, preferred.

  • Demonstrated RT-PCR and ELISA experience.

  • Excellent computer skills and ability to learn new computer programs. Demonstrated knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook. Ability to perform data entry.

  • Demonstrated experience in immunohistochemistry and image analysis of lungs.

  • Demonstrated experience performing standard laboratory techniques (pipetting, weighing). Ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Ability to follow experimental protocols.

  • Good organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.

  • Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories.

  • Skill in accurate record keeping paying close attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as to effectively document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Willingness to learn new techniques and tasks and share knowledge of such.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Continued funding for this position is dependent upon successful grant renewal for this position.

  • Must be willing to work with mice and allergens.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
