Job Description

Layout Inspector

Mission:

Under general supervision, perform a wide variety of Layout Inspection functions on complex, critical castings, patterns and other items to assure conformance of castings or materials to customer requirements using generally accepted inspection methods in accordance with quality standards. Ensure that documentation, tooling and parts are correctly matched to paperwork.

Principle Accountabilities:

  1. Inspector Layout

Objective: To set up and perform inspection functions on complex and critical castings, patterns or other items conforming to visual and dimensional specifications on technique cards to accomplish the inspection.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Set up and perform inspection functions on complex and critical castings, patterns or other items conforming to visual and dimensional specifications on technique cards to accomplish the inspection.
  • Demonstrate the ability to complete all departmental paperwork in fine detail and explain the logic of all phases.
  • Able of performing all manner of surface plate setups for manual and CMM situations.
  • Operate CMM machines.
  • Perform visual and dimensional inspection of patterns per part grade levels. May use such measuring devices as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.
  • Perform complex setups of inspection equipment to implement inspection on CMM.
  • Use manual inspection techniques to inspect parts for compliance with understanding of CMM operation.
  • Know function and theory of comparator.
  • Demonstrate the ability to layout all jobs using all available equipment with high level of efficiency.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret and mathematically substantiate all drawings.
  • Layout all jobs that might require special consideration due to ongoing problems or different results between the Company and the customer, and substantiate results.
  • Serve as a resource for the evaluation of QC inprocess inspection and give advice for correcting any problems.
  • Able to efficiently work on special projects relating to engineering development. One example: Reverse Engineering.
  • Maintain an information source relationship between customers, tooling vendors, and engineering. Give advice on construction techniques of fixtures to allow for proper use of the tool.
  • Assist engineering with problems relating to die cavity, process, or straightness. Give advice on corrective action for a specific problem.
  • Assist engineering with decisions relating to print interpretations, such as choosing an inspection technique, i.e. would the job need a tooling fixture or would another approach be more feasible.
  • Maintain outside layout sources, evaluate their work, and determine a system of cost analysis for approval of their charges.
  • Maintain good customer relations; work with source inspectors for audits on calibration records, layout interpretation, etc. Help negotiate practical and favorable layout solutions to problem castings with customers.
  • As directed by QC management, calibrate and maintain appropriate records for all types of inspection equipment as required in plant.
  • Possess educational background required to engineering trouble shoot on layout dimensional problems.
  • Transport castings into and out of inspection area.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork and records as required. Maintain daily inspection reports, logs, and time cards as required.
  • Report any discrepancies or out of tolerance condition to inspection supervisor and prepare corrective action requests as required.
  • Able to make cost analysis for decision making, and exercise good judgment.
  • Able to pass visual acuity and other required tests to meet requirements of position.
  • Demonstrate an excellent understanding of blueprint interpretation and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Demonstrate the ability to do complex set-ups and inspections of castings, fixtures, and tooling on the surface plate; able to operate all functions of the CMM including part inspection programming, operation, and maintenance, without supervision.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of shop math, ANSI/ASME Y14.5M-1982 specifications, and ability to solve geometric problems involving trigonometric functions and algebraic expressions, plus conversion to Metric.
  • Inspect parts for dimensional compliance using moderately complex gauging, such as height gages, dial indicators, profilometers, CMM, comparators, etc.
  • Possess ability to do all manner of set-ups and inspections of castings, fixtures, and tooling on the CMM without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrate safe and efficient handling of all tools, dies, equipment and fork lift (if applicable) to prevent damage.
  • Maintain equipment in good, clean working order.
    • Work safely when lifting, use transport devices or get help if needed.
    • Use CMM or various outside source calibration tools to calibrate in house items.
    • Use CMM to recalibrate step gauges is appropriate.
    • Record all updated calibration dates in computer and on item tag.
