Pay Range: $20.00-$33.00 (Hourly, Non-Exempt)

PURPOSE:

The Layout Inspector ensures that complex and critical castings, patterns, and components meet customer and regulatory requirements through precise dimensional and visual inspections. Working under general supervision, this role performs advanced inspection techniques using surface plate setups, CMM equipment, and calibrated tools to verify quality and compliance. The Layout Inspector is a key contributor to maintaining PCC's reputation for delivering precision-engineered products to aerospace and industrial customers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Inspection & Setup

* Set up and perform dimensional and visual inspections on complex castings, patterns, and tooling to verify compliance with customer specifications and technique cards.

* Perform surface plate inspections, manual gauging, and advanced CMM operations, including programming, setup, and part inspection.

* Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) requirements to ensure accurate measurements.

* Apply mathematical and geometric principles (including trigonometry and solid geometry) to solve inspection challenges.

Documentation & Reporting

* Complete inspection reports, logs, calibration records, and other required documentation with a high level of accuracy.

* Record discrepancies, report out-of-tolerance conditions to supervisors, and prepare corrective action requests as required.

* Maintain and update calibration dates in computer systems and on equipment tags.

Engineering & Customer Support

* Collaborate with engineering to troubleshoot dimensional issues, recommend corrective actions, and support tooling or fixture development.

* Assist with special projects such as reverse engineering, print interpretation, and inspection method selection.

* Serve as a technical resource for QC in-process inspections and provide guidance on resolving inspection problems.

* Maintain communication with customers, tooling vendors, and source inspectors; support audits and resolve layout interpretation issues.

Equipment, Maintenance & Safety

* Operate, calibrate, and maintain CMMs, comparators, profilometers, and a variety of precision inspection tools.

* Ensure inspection equipment, fixtures, and measuring devices are maintained in proper working order.

* Safely handle castings, dies, and tools using lifting devices (forklifts, cranes, lift tables) as needed.

* Follow all plant safety policies; identify and report safety concerns to prevent incidents.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

* This position reports directly to the Production Supervisor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach regularly throughout the work shift.

* Capable of lifting, carrying, and moving parts, castings, and equipment up to 35 pounds independently.

* Good hand-eye coordination and depth perception required for safe handling of precision tools and components.

* Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to dust, noise, and moving equipment.

* Must be able to safely operate forklifts, cranes, and other lifting devices when handling heavy tools, dies, or fixtures.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

* High school diploma or GED; additional technical coursework in inspection, machining, or engineering disciplines.

* 3+ years of experience in layout inspection, surface plate/mechanical inspection, tool and die making, or a closely related field.

* Background in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).

* Strong applied math skills, including decimals, fractions, conversions, solid geometry, trigonometry, and algebraic functions.

* Proficiency with precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, profilometers, comparators, and CMMs.

* Experience with CMM setup, programming, and inspection.

* Familiarity with non-destructive testing principles, sampling methods, and specialized inspection techniques.

* Effective communication skills with the ability to document inspection results and collaborate across teams.

* Willingness to complete specialized training in inspection techniques as required.

BENEFITS:

* Eligible to participate in the Company's Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, based on performance.

* 80 hours of paid time off annually, plus 10 paid holidays.

* Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage. Employees (and their families) are eligible to participate.
