Business Unit EHS Manager

Provide technical support to assigned business unit in order for all facilities within the business unit to achieve continuous EHS improvement by utilizing the DFA EHS Management System. Implement environmental and safety efforts for assigned business unit. Provide assistance to corporate and division personnel, including Location Managers, EHS Field Managers, and EHS support, to identify and correct at-risk behaviors and conditions. Manage regulatory compliance efforts company-wide in close collaboration with all other DFA EH&S Managers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Provide technical, functional, and program management activities, which include planning, directing, and providing leadership across a division or multi-location business unit
  • Provide specialized oversight on matters of environmental and workplace safety matters. As an advisor, offer counseling to managers and supervisors on how to administer coaching regarding at-risk behaviors and practices
  • Work with assigned business unit, location management and/or EHS Field Manager to solve EHS issues which may arise
  • Manage EHS practices; administer/implement EHS programs and policies outlined by OSHA, EPA, and DOT as appropriate and maintain all pertinent records to ensure compliance with EHS regulations and internal policies
  • Lead assessments of assigned business unit to identify and develop corrective action plans for at-risk behaviors and conditions which may cause injury, regulatory non-compliance, or property loss
  • Work with assigned business unit to ensure a culture of consistently safe behavior and compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies
  • Function as the Corporate representative between facilities, regulatory agencies, and consultant firms for environmental affairs and compliance
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend changes to improve EHS performance
  • Develop and administer required policies and procedures for regulatory compliance
  • Where required, assist facilities in permitting and reporting activities for air, NPDES, wastewater, stormwater, EPCRA Tier 2, Form R, refrigerant management, spill reporting, and other applicable environmental regulations.
  • Develop action plans and regulatory correspondence to address areas of non-compliance identified through regulatory inspections or required testing
  • Develop and maintain internal EHS policies and practices to ensure they are current and appropriate
  • Develop and/or support all required training mandated by regulatory and corporate EHS guidelines and practices
  • Assist with and evaluate incident investigations to determine the root cause of injury or release and the at-risk behavior
  • Work with vendors and insurance companies that provide protection programs, surveys, inspections, and location evaluations
  • Maintain awareness of all outstanding workers' compensation claims for all assigned locations and work collaboratively with Corporate Risk Management personnel to support their management of such claims
  • Work with assigned business unit and EHS Field Manager to interpret EHS challenges, develop corrective actions, and recommend best practices
  • Work with assigned business unit and EHS Field Manager to ensure correction of observed deficiencies and issues

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience



  • AS/BA/BS in Industrial Safety, Environmental Science, or related field and/or
  • 8-10 years' experience in Environmental Health & Safety in a manufacturing environment
  • Must have a valid license to operate a passenger vehicle
  • Certification and/or License - ASP/CSP/CIH Certification desirable but not required



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Must be willing to travel 50-75%
  • Technical knowledge of OSHA standards and requirements, both federal and state regulations
  • Technical knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations
  • Working knowledge of EH&S management principles
  • Able to work with others to solve complex problems
  • Familiarity with the workers' compensation process
  • Knowledge of and skill with Microsoft Office Suite and company computer systems
  • Able to organize time, energy, and resources effectively to achieve goals (i.e., organizational skills) with guidance only in complex situations
  • Able manage multiple priorities
  • Able to demonstrate qualities as a self-starter
  • Able to work independently and perform task and duties with minimal supervision
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, for a diverse range of internal and external audiences
  • Able to communicate difficult concepts and negotiate with others to adopt a different point of view
  • Must be able to present to diverse audiences from front line team members to division management
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English
