Research Assistant I/II

The Murray Lab is seeking a motivated, detail oriented full time Research Assistant to join our team at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. The successful candidate will leverage the tools of molecular and developmental biology to advance understanding of the genetic underpinnings of craniofacial birth defects. Projects will leverage novel CRISPR based genome editing technologies to build new mouse models to validate and functionally characterize human orofacial clefting associated risk variants. Innate curiosity and enthusiasm for all things biological are key traits. This position is a great opportunity for both experienced associates to expand their skills and for energetic new graduates with a passion for research. Candidates seeking to obtain hands-on research experience prior to entering graduate school in the life sciences are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute projects, conducts tests and experiments following standard or modified protocols
  • Identify and document variations that may affect the validity of the experiment.
  • Data collection and analysis, perform quality control, monitor data for accuracy, summarize and interpret results with consultation of supervisor.
  • Upload data to database system within agreed upon timelines with supervisor.
  • Ensure functionality and maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Assist in preparing data for progress reports, manuscripts, and grant applications.
  • Mouse colony maintenance, molecular biology, microscopy, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and cell culture techniques.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 1-3 years of related experience.
  • Mouse handling and husbandry skills preferred.
  • Demonstrate an effective experimental approach with attention to detail and ability to generate accurate, reproducible results.
  • Fundamental computer skills, including Excel and Word, familiarity with genome browsers a plus.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate information verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to positively engage with all individuals in a productive, collaborative, and professional manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program.
  • Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and focused with proven ability to manage time effectively and work under time constraints, meet deadlines and prioritize work.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts (evening/week-end/holiday).

Par Range: $19.93- $27.40 per hour, depending upon experience
