Job Description

Albemarle Corporation, a global leader in advanced material for mobility, energy, connectivity and health, is seeking an analytical chemist with industrial experience and expertise NMR spectroscopy.

This role will support Research and Technology (R&T) workstreams in new products, customer applications and process development. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and execution of advanced NMR techniques in support of structural elucidation, molecular dynamics studies and characterization of complex materials including but not limited to bromine & lithium chemical derivatives, polymer catalysts & additives, advanced bromine and lithium salts. The role involves interfacing with internal stakeholders, collaboration within R&T and across other functions, planning and executing method development activities, providing thorough documentation, and communicating results/findings. Excellent communication skills are important for the role. This position reports to the Analytical R&T Director and will be based at our Process Development Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

What You Will Do

  • Function as the key subject matter expert in NMR spectroscopy, stay current with NMR technology/industry trends for implementation and mentor/train junior team members.

  • Design and execute NMR experiments (1D & 2D techniques, multinuclear, solution-state and solid-state, data interpretation) for characterizing raw materials, process intermediates and finished products.

  • Develop, validate, document NMR methods, publish technical reports, write SOPs and investigation reports in support of product & process development, quality investigations and root cause analysis across all product lines.

  • Lead and coordinate analytical programs for new products, customer applications and process development projects, process analytical technologies, collaborate across R&T, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Stewardship to ensure analytical support meets goals.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot high-field NMR spectrometers to ensure reliability and compliance with internal quality and safety standards.

  • Develop and apply a strong technical knowledge of Albemarle's products.

  • Maintain excellence in safety, health, and environment practices.

What You Bring

Required:

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline with strong emphasis on NMR spectroscopy

  • At least 5 years of relevant industrial experience and proven expertise in interpreting complex NMR spectra data into actionable insights, strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Hands-on expertise with high field spectrometers and low-field benchtop instruments, advanced quantitative NMR techniques (solution-state) and proficiency in software packages i.e., TopSpin, MNova, NMRPipe, Spartan, Gaussian.

  • Knowledge of analytical method development, validation, transfer, ASTM, ISO, and quality assurance, familiar with common lab safety best practices

  • Strong critical thinking skills, ability to work independently and in teams to prioritize and provide timely response to multiple parallel requests.

Preferred:

  • Ph. D in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science or a related technical discipline

  • Experience in both solution-state and solid-state NMR and other complimentary material characterization techniques

  • Experience in bromine & lithium chemical derivatives, polymer catalysts & additives, advanced bromine, and lithium salts
