About the Department |
The University Controller's Office is a department within the Finance Division. The office has business units covering the following areas: The office is responsible for cash services, asset management, financial reporting, payroll, accounts payable, debt, and the university's tax compliance.
The University Controller's Office works to advance NC State as a leader in fiscal accountability and responsibility through a partnership with our campus community, strong partnerships with our peer groups, improvements in the University's financial systems and internal controls, and efficient and effective business operations. The University Controller's Office is responsible for fiscal accountability, accuracy, and reporting of the university with a net position of over $1.8 billion, including timely and accurate payment of monthly and biweekly wages to over 18,000 staff, faculty, student workers, and temporary employees, over 115,000 vendor payments annually and management of a $600 million external debt portfolio. |
Essential Job Duties |
We are seeking a knowledgeable and forward-thinking Capital Asset Accounting Manager to oversee the full lifecycle of over $2 billion in capital assets and lead compliance efforts that impact financial reporting across the University and beyond.
As the functional lead for capital asset management, you will play a critical part in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting year-end activities, and ensuring compliance with evolving Government Accounting Standards Board standards (
GASB), State regulations, and
UNC System Office (
UNC-SO) policies. You'll guide two direct reports, collaborate with stakeholders across campus, and serve as a key liaison between campus departments, the
UNC System Office, and State financial systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the lifecycle of 17,000+ capital assets, including inventory, tagging, surplus, and data integrity.
- Lead compliance efforts with GASB, UNC-SO, and State requirements.
- Oversee capital asset subsystem in PeopleSoft and lead interface/reporting efforts with UNC-SO and the state financial system.
- Support year-end close, including fixed assets and construction-in-progress (CIP) reporting.
- Translate new legislation and standards into actionable business processes.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and develop two Capital Asset Accountants.
- Partner with leadership on special projects and represent the Associate Controller in meetings.
- Maintain and enhance KPI reporting related to asset management.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or Other Discipline related to the area of assignment with 12 Credit Hours of accounting coursework and three years of professional accounting experience, of which at least one is supervisory; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Significant experience in capital asset accounting - from acquisition through disposal - including tagging, inventory, depreciation, and surplus processes.
- Ability to navigate competing priorities and deadlines with professionalism and collaboration across organizational levels.
- Leadership experience, including supervising and mentoring accounting staff, driving process improvements, and fostering professional development.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Strong working knowledge of GASB standards and fund accounting principles, with proven experience applying them in a higher education, government, or complex organizational setting.
- Hands-on experience with ERP systems, preferably PeopleSoft (Oracle), including asset management modules, surplus workflows, and multi-entity reporting.
- Proven track record of preparing for audits of financial statements, with attention to accuracy, compliance, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated success managing complex reconciliations and high-volume transactions.
