Recreation is an integral part of UC San Diego, striving to achieve the same standards of excellence that exists within the university's academic programs. Providing a broad scope of high quality,dynamic recreational experiences that benefit students, staff, faculty and the University community and supporting a culture of Wellness at UCSD, major programs include Intramural Sports; Sports Clubs; Recreation Instructional Classes and camps; Special Events and Outdoor Education. Recreation manages all indoor and outdoor sports facilities on the UC San Diego campus that include RIMAC, Main Gym, Canyonview Aquatic Center, Spanos and all multi-purpose playing fields.. Working in close conjunction with Intercollegiate Athletics, student and staff organizations, and the community.

Recreation provides maintenance, scheduling, retail and support services for special events that improve the quality of life on campus. Recreation has an annual operating budget of $17.5 million from various fund sources and employs 74 full time staff and over 800 students. Full time staff are both non represented and represented employees who span seven different union agreements.

Perform journey-level skilled mechanical maintenance tasks in the swimming pool, spa and building facilities on a regular and continuing basis. Perform a variety of skilled tasks in the building and pool maintenance, alteration and repair of the UCSD Aquatics facilities, UCSD Recreation Facilities, and their related equipment.

Maintains and performs designated repairs of aquatic facilities and other buildings, including but not limited to pumps, motors, controllers, chemical feeders & tanks, HVAC, electrical, lighting, plumbing, high temperature, medium temperature and mechanical systems. Operates various computer applications for the above said systems. Occasionally alters systems to achieve optimum results. Maintains and repairs mechanical and plumbing systems and components.

Upon approval, occasionally alters utility runs and modifies mechanical and plumbing components. Assists other staff. Provides work direction to student maintenance employees as needed.

• Perform journey-level skilled mechanical maintenance tasks in the commercial aquatic facility industry such as swimming pools, spas, their related systems and other building facilities. Ability to help assign tasks as needed for maintaining facilities. Help supervise students and delegate work. Ability to monitor operations and help develop preventive maintenance schedules for pool and spa systems. Maintain current and accurate records and logs. Ability to maintain schedules.

• Demonstrated knowledge of construction, repair and maintenance needs for an aquatics facility. Anticipate problems in assigned work areas, identify appropriate solutions, make independent decisions and a day-to-day basis, and assume responsibility. Ability to enforce department and University policies.

• Demonstrated knowledge of standard HTHW, HVAC, heating, refrigeration, electrical and plumbing systems; use computer, meters, hand and power tools, to perform repairs. Monitor condition of and to develop preventive maintenance schedules.

• Demonstrated knowledge of California State Public Health Department and EH&S requirements as they apply to swimming pools and spas. Knowledge and understanding of related safety practices. Help ensure compliance with same by self and others.

• Demonstrated knowledge of operation, modification and repair of pool and spa systems including hydronic systems, pump operation, repairs and maintenance, pump curves and calculating heat loss.

• Demonstrated knowledge of water chemistry and balance such as Langelier Saturation Index and Ryzner Saturation Index. Demonstrated ability to apply same to prevent scale and corrosion.

• Demonstrated knowledge of filtration systems, chemical feeders and flow meters including properties and methods associated with sodium hypochlorite, muriatic acid, CO2, sodium thiosulfate, sodium bicarbonate and calcium chloride. Controlling total dissolved solids. Ability to work with iron, calcium, manganese and other undesirable properties of source water.

• Demonstrated ability to comprehend technical manuals and blueprints.

• Technical and specific knowledge of equipment associated with an operating system for HTHW-heated/solar-heated/gas-heated pool; ability to repair same. Demonstrated knowledge of automated computer control systems in the Aquatic Industry. Knowledge of electrical systems. Demonstrated knowledge of pool and spa chemical feeder systems.

• Demonstrated skill to prioritize work assignments to meet established deadlines and needs of the facilities. Assist in the preparation and coordination of work schedules. Ability to supervise students. Delegate tasks in an efficient manner, meeting established deadlines and area needs in a changing environment.

• Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate with faculty, staff, students and the general public in a professional manner, displaying tact, diplomacy and patience; ability to perform in a responsible manner.

• Demonstrated ability and knowledge to use PC and Window applications.

• Demonstrated knowledge of pool cleaning tools and equipment, and appropriate use of same, including automatic remote controlled pool vacuums.

• General knowledge of water safety guidelines.

• Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

• This position works 100% onsite at UC San Diego Campus. The regular work schedule for this position is Tuesday - Saturday; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Must work occasional flexible, variable hours, including evenings, weekend, and holiday as operationally necessary. This position is required to be on site for select large campus events.

• If driving a University vehicle, must have current California Driver license, maintain good driving record and participate in the DMV pull program.

• Must have current Aquatics Facility Operator certification or be willing to obtain certification within one (1) year of hire date.
