About the Position

This Civil Deputy County Attorney works within the Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, in the Human Resources, Behavioral Health, and Probate Practice Group. The successful candidate will be able to lead the probate practice, including advising the Public Fiduciary's Office, preparing pleadings, and attending hearings in court. The Senior Counsel will mentor other attorneys and support staff in the probate practice area.

The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the Maricopa County government, including its elected officials, departments, and employees. Our work involves defending legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against County entities, including Section 1983, tort, election, and tax litigation. We also provide legal advice to County officials on various public law topics. Additionally, we process public records requests for the Maricopa County Attorney. Our division has four practice groups: Litigation; Government Advice & Elected Officials; Human Resources, Behavioral Health, and Probate Group; and Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax.

We Require

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited and American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school

  • Six years of experience as a practicing attorney

  • Successful candidates must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application

  • Valid Arizona driver's license upon hire

  • The Maricopa County Attorney's Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs. Drug testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and before placement

Job Contributions

  • Perform complex legal work and analysis as it pertains to litigation issues involving the client

  • Conduct research and analyze legal issues using both computerized legal research and hard copy tools

  • Draft various documents, including report and update motions, memorandums, and various other court documents

  • Attend court to present and defend the client at status conferences, oral arguments on motions, in evidentiary hearings and other hearings as set by the court

  • Responsible for compliance with the continuing legal education requirements and other requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona

Working Conditions

  • Teleworking is available after a probationary period at the discretion of management and the needs of the office

  • May require extended periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing, and moving about while performing duties

  • Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings and trainings, utilizing personal or county-owned vehicle

  • Ability to move up to 20 pounds
