About the Job

Position Overview

The School of Kinesiology occasionally needs teaching specialists to teach Physical Education courses that cannot be taught by existing staff and graduate assistants. This search will establish a "pool" of instructors. Applicants will be selected from that pool on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year. Applications may not be acknowledged, but will be reviewed when such openings occur throughout the academic year. Instructors are appointed on a semester basis, dependent on teaching needs of the School of Kinesiology. Appointment does not carry benefits.

These are temporary, non-tenured, Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) positions as Teaching Specialist or Lecturer, paid on a per course basis. Typically these appointments are made semester by semester or in the summer, and employment is contingent on the course meeting its enrollment target. This appointment is specifically for the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters. This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager.

Job Responsibilities

Teaching (70%)

  • Teach a 1-credit, 1xxx-level physical education course
  • Develop and deliver course syllabus, lessons, lectures, assignments, assessments, grading, and activities
  • Attend all class meetings - 28 hours per semester

Course Preparation (20%)

  • Prior to the start of the semester, develop the course syllabus, identify course resources, and create course content
  • Maintain CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications
  • Participate in on-campus and online training as determined by the program director

Student Development/Advising (10%)

  • Promptly respond to student inquiries and proactively provide relevant course information
  • Utilize the University of Minnesota email system for student communication outside of in-person contact
  • Evaluate student academic performance and submit grades
  • Serve as the on-site supervisor for the facility space during the time of the class

Performance Expectations

  • Lead students through activities and lessons that will allow them to have a better cognitive and psychomotor understanding for the specific physical activity, to identify how they can engage in the activity throughout their lifespan, and to practice the highest standard of etiquette related to the activity upon the completion of the course
  • University and program policies and grading rigor are adhered to throughout the course
  • Lesson planning will be done in advance and will be done with thought and care
  • Creatively assist students in meeting learning objectives through meaningful in and out of class activities
  • Ensure that the course syllabus fully articulates what you will expect from students and what students can expect from the course, and is distributed to students at the start of the semester
  • Understand and adhere to all University, College of Education, School of Kinesiology and Physical Activity Program policies, timelines, due dates and procedures
  • Maintain a safe classroom environment
  • An inclusive environment is maintained so that students of all ability levels and from all backgrounds have the opportunity to successfully participate in the course
  • Check and respond to UMN x500 email regularly and use this email when conducting any business related to this course
  • University and program requirements are adhered to and paperwork is promptly turned in at the start of the semester
  • Certifications are maintained throughout the semester and additional trainings suggested by the program or university are attended
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or Ph.D. in education, physical education or a related area. Applicants with a M.A. will be hired as Teaching Specialist. Applicants with a Ph.D. will be hired as a Lecturer
  • At least 3 years of experience specifically addressing ONE of the courses listed in the program/unit description. This must be clearly identifiable in the applicant's cover letter and resume
  • Currently certified in CPR and First Aid - Proof of certification is required upon request.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching or advising at the collegiate level

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: The salary range for this position is $1,200 - $1,400 per credit taught based on experience level; 1 to 4 credits maximum. There is also an option to pay $1,600 per credit if position includes mentoring a new instructor or developing/delivering an online modality for the first time.
