About the Job

The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering continually accepts resumes for teaching positions that may open up during the academic year. Applications are reviewed as openings occur, and individual applicants are invited to interview when their skills or areas of expertise match a specific opening. These are temporary, non-tenured, Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) positions as Teaching Specialist or Lecturer, paid on a per course basis. Typically, these appointments are made semester by semester and employment is contingent on the course meeting its enrollment target. This posting is designed to establish a pool of instructors. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year. Applications will not be acknowledged but will be reviewed when such openings occur throughout the academic year.

Job Responsibilities
Teaching/Instruction (90%)

  • Teach a course per semester at an undergraduate or graduate level on course topics such as: Comparative and International Development Education (CIDE), Education Policy and Leadership, Evaluation Studies, Higher Education, or Human Resource Development.
  • Prepare course materials including syllabus.
  • Grade student materials including exams, papers, presentations, and final exams.
  • Submit grades.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Student Advising (10%)

  • Respond to student inquires via email, phone, or in person.
  • Evaluate student performance.
Qualifications

Required

  • Master's degree is normally required for an appointment as a Teaching Specialist. The appointee is not required to have the same credentials expected of faculty but must have demonstrated competence to teach the course material. Professional and/or teaching experience related to assigned instructional responsibilities may be required
  • A Doctorate or terminal degree relevant to the teaching assignment required for the appointment as Lecturer. .
  • Ability to develop and deliver courses in ways that effectively account for a variety of diverse backgrounds, communities, identities, and abilities.

Preferred

  • Strong record of teaching in a university setting.
  • Strong understanding of curriculum concepts and processes.

The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (bbe.umn.edu) is an internationally renowned academic unit with the core mission of sustainable use of renewable resources and enhancement of the environment. BBE is affiliated with both the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) and the College of Science and Engineering (CSE).

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $1,000 - $10,000 per class; depending on education/qualifications/experience, course credit load, and number of students enrolled in the course.
