Summary
Acts as an active member of the patient care team to provide clinical patient care assessment, initiation, modification and discontinuance of therapeutic respiratory care procedures to critically ill patients. Analyzes and evaluates clinical patient data to determine the appropriate therapy or interventions and makes recommendations on patient care plans to the medical staff. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes Essential Functions -Initiates and/or assists with appropriate respiratory and extracorporeal life support (ECLS) tests and procedures, as ordered, to deliver appropriate care to patients. -Responds to respiratory and ECLS emergencies and transports patients when moved from units for tests and procedures. -Prepares appropriate care plan and makes specific recommendations to physician for indicated therapy. Schedules patient treatments as necessary and provides consultation as an active member of the patient care team. -Manages the administration of all aspects of respiratory therapy and ECLS according to the policies and procedures, including ECLS equipment. -Makes regular bedside rounds and administers Respiratory Care modalities to assigned patients. Modifies treatment care plan according to clinical picture and response to therapy. -Participates in education of students, physicians, staff, and patients/families. Clinically supervises respiratory therapy students in patient areas. Required: 1. A.S. in Respiratory Therapy. 2. Critical care experience 1-2 years required 3. Currently licensed as a Respiratory Therapist by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 4. Registration (RRT) by the N.B.R.C. within six (6) months of hire. Preferred: 1. B.S. in Respiratory Therapy. 2. Two years of previous critical care experience. 3. ELSO certification preferred SKILLS AND ABILITIIES REQUIRED 1. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills to interact with physicians, nurses and other allied health care members. 2. Must possess strong patient assessment skills. 3. Must possess professional and technical skills to act as a staff therapist. 4. Must demonstrate ability to motivate and direct professional and technical staff. WORKING CONDITIONS 1. Works in patient care environments including intensive care, recovery room, and emergency room.May be exposed to prolonged periods of high temperatures in burn patient rooms.May be required to stand immobile for long periods of time in emergency situations. 2.
