Alcon has ambitious plans to blend modern manufacturing technologies with digital technologies. This position will be responsible for driving modern automation and manufacturing technologies into Alcon's global manufacturing footprint, in turn unlocking digital technology capabilities. The position will create strategic plans and then partner closely with the sites and vendors to execute projects, bringing strategy into reality. The ideal candidate will think organizationally as much as they will technically to build scalable solutions and processes for multiple sites to use.

You will be a senior technical leader and global subject matter expert on automation systems and manufacturing technology. A key aspect to the role will require close collaboration across multiple local/global functions including engineering, data science, data engineering, and R&D teams. To enable speed and efficiency, this position will own global requirements templates that enable "plug and play" functionality into Alcon's digital environment and adherence to corporate procedures.

This role will also own the Smart Technology Prototype Lab that allows new integrated technologies (physical and digital) to be developed prior to scaling across the manufacturing network. The position will also identify strategic vendors across core manufacturing technologies and collaborate with the vendors and procurement to gain time and cost efficiencies (sterile barrier sealing, packaging, imaging systems, AGVs). In this role, a typical day will include:

  • Lead the design, development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of advanced instrument/electrical and automation control systems
  • Focus on mathematical modeling of diverse systems and analyze their dynamic behavior, applying control theory to create controllers ensuring systems behave as desired
  • Oversee multiple complex projects, ensuring goals are met through expertise and innovation, and make critical technical decisions affecting project outcomes
  • Provide strategic direction to the engineering team and stay current with advances in system design, configuration, and automation
  • Adhere to GxP regulations by following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintaining accurate documentation, ensuring quality control, and completing required training
  • Meet individual job requirements and contribute to organizational compliance, committing to continuous improvement and regulatory compliance

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO ALCON:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school+15 yrs; Assoc.+11 yrs; M.S.+4 yrs; PhD+3 yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
  • 7 Years of Relevant Experience

PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, controls, automation, systems engineering, or other related field
  • 7 years with Bachelor's, 4 years with Master's, all with hands on experience in industrial automation engineering, experience in a GxP environment (med device, pharma) ideal
  • High technical horsepower with extensive depth and breadth in industrial automation systems
  • Experience in designing, building, commissioning, optimizing, and decommissioning manufacturing automation systems
  • Demonstrated expertise in automation integration of PLCs (Allen Bradley, Beckhoff) and SCADA systems (Ignition) into enterprise manufacturing data systems (MES, ERP, Siemens, SAP)
  • Organizational agility within a global manufacturing organization through understanding of the complexity of implementing new technologies and systems across diverse sites and cultures.
