Principal Global MTO Automation Engineer

Alcon has ambitious plans to blend modern manufacturing technologies with digital technologies. This position will be a technical subject matter expert on software aspects of industrial automation systems including PLC, SCADA, MES, ERP implementations and subsequent extraction of insights through reporting, ad hoc analytics, automated alerting, and AI/ML concepts for manufacturing systems. You will be responsible for supporting strategic automation and digital solution implementations globally through detailed, technical consulting and onsite presence during key activities.

This position will also be responsible for creating and maintaining global automation integration templates for use across Alcon's global manufacturing footprint. These templates enable "plug and play" functionality into Alcon's digital environment and requires close partnerships across multiple local/global functions including engineering, IT (infrastructure, data science, data engineering, etc.), and R&D teams.

This role will be a key member and user of the Smart Technology Prototype Lab that allows new integrated technologies (physical and digital) to be developed prior to scaling across the manufacturing network. In this role, a typical day will include:

  • Lead technical projects involving the design, development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of instrument/electrical and automation control systems
  • Focus on mathematical modeling of systems, analyzing their dynamic behavior, and applying control theory to develop effective controllers
  • Make operational decisions that directly impact project performance and innovation
  • Stay updated with advances in system design, configuration, and automation
  • Adhere to GxP regulations by following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintaining accurate documentation
  • Ensure rigorous quality control, complete all required training, and commit to continuous improvement and compliance with regulatory requirements

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO ALCON:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
  • 5 Years of Relevant Experience

PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in software, electrical, controls, automation, systems engineering, or other related field
  • 5 years with Bachelor's, 2 years with Master's, all with hands on experience in industrial automation systems, experience in a GxP environment (med device, pharma) ideal
  • Proven software development skills with depth in industrial automation systems
  • Detailed experience in designing, building, commissioning, and optimizing integrated automated systems
  • Demonstrated experience in automation integration of PLCs (Allen Bradley, Beckhoff) and SCADA systems (Ignition) into enterprise manufacturing data systems (MES, ERP, Siemens, SAP)
