Department Marketing Statement:

Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises houses 10,000 students, faculty and family residents on campus, provides support services for 9,300 students residing in the communities adjacent to the campus, serves 21,000 customers daily in its retail and board dining programs, manages the UCSB Campus Store and University Center, hosts 150,000 guests annually for conferences and meetings, manages a major events center (Events Center), and oversees the administration of transportation, parking and fleet services. Additional responsibilities in the HDAE portfolio include Administrative & Residential Information Technology (ARIT) and The Club & Guest House. HDAE employs 600 full-time employees and 1,800 student employees. HDAE maintains a physical plant of more than 3 million square feet of buildings and 250 acres of grounds and landscaping.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Assistant Manager of Starbucks trains and supervises a team of part-time student employees. Creates and maintains the Starbucks product and store experience for customers. The Assistant Manager is required to be the floor manager; ensures consistent service, supervision and sanitation.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School Diploma

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years in retail coffee location or restaurant environment-specifically in the area of customer service, merchandising and inventory.
  • Experience in supervising and managing staff. Ability to work effectively with others, full-time and student staff.
  • Demonstrated ability working with diverse student and career staff.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, including ability to effectively convey information verbally and in writing.
  • HACCP and Sanitation knowledge and Certification.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work standing for up to 8 hours per day.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • Staffing & Training - 70%
  • Provides training, supervision, and leadership to a staff that consists of PT student managers, PT student supervisors, and 45 PT student associates.
  • Facilitates job enrichment, continued training and cross training for all employees.
  • Manages with integrity, honesty, and knowledge to promote the culture, values, and mission of Starbucks.
  • Assists with hiring, scheduling, and disciplinary actions to ensure store standards are met.
  • Motivates the store team to meet operational and organizational objectives.
  • Provides coaching and direction to the store team, makes recommendations to the Starbucks Manager on achieving operational goals.
  • Financial Duties - 15%
  • Evaluates daily, weekly, and monthly sales and product mix reports and correlates that information with labor and budgetary goals. Makes adjustments to staffing as needed.
  • Reviews the store environment and key business indicators to identify problems, concerns, and opportunities for improvement in marketing and sales.
  • Responsible for adhering to university policy and procedure in regard to cash handling.
  • Assists with monthly physical inventory and adhering to all end of month procedures and timeline for invoices, transfers, waste logs, and write offs.
  • Monitors timecards for payroll purposes through the timekeeping system.
  • Purchasing/Operations - 15%
  • Responsible for assessing daily inventory levels of all food and non food items.
  • Uses CBORD for invoice management and payment.
  • Provides modified Serv Safe training to staff in food handling, food storage, sanitation, safety, and overall store cleanliness.
  • Ensures proper food handling procedures.
  • Ensures temperature logs are being utilized on all refrigerators/freezers.
