Job Summary
Serves as assistant coach for men's and women's track and field, providing leadership to specific event area(s) as agreed upon with Director of Cross Country and Track & Field. Understands the role of NCAA and Division III athletics in the educational process and recruits quality student-athletes, who reflect and represent the quality of Elmhurst University.
Salary Range $44,000 - $47,500. This is the expected salary range for this position. The actual salary offered will depend on a candidate's experience and education, and departmental budget.
Essential Functions

  • Assists with all operations of an effective track and field program.
  • Under the direction of the Director, coordinates the recruitment efforts for women's and men's track and field athletes, including communicating regularly with prospective student athletes, scheduling and organizing on-campus visits, traveling to PSA competitions, and communicating with Office of Admission on a regular basis, contributing significantly to the enrollment effort of both the University and the Athletic Department.
  • Develops the training plans for the NCAA-allowed training days for the selected event groups, facilitating all in-season practices for the assigned athletes.
  • Provides feedback, both written and communicated in-person, to athletes throughout the season.
  • Maintains and updates a sufficient inventory of equipment and materials needed to successfully operate the indoor and outdoor track and field programs, providing head coach with information necessary on equipment and uniform needs.
  • Directs in-season strength and conditioning activities for the student-athletes under their supervision.
  • Assists the Director in all facets of home meet management, including preparation, communication with timing company and visiting teams, and meet day management.
  • Conducts pre-meet, in-competition, and post-meet coaching during intercollegiate contests.
  • Prior to the start of track and field season, is available to assist cross country program with home meet management, transportation to off-campus contests and practices.
  • Counsels student-athletes, sets up short- and long-range goals, and when necessary, provides student athletes with academic support, including weekly check-ins and progress report meetings.
  • Participates in and helps organize fundraising efforts for both cross country and track and field teams.
  • Is present at all practices and competitions.
  • Maintains positive public relations with the community through an assortment of events including camps and clinics, including building relationships with area high school coaches and other key stakeholders.
  • Assists the Director with alumni relations and contribute to a growing, vibrant relationship with the men's and women's alumni.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of Elmhurst University, NCAA, and CCIW rules and regulations.
  • Adheres to NCAA Compliance Regulations.
  • Endorses and supports other sport within the Athletic Department and fulfill other secondary duties as outlined by the Director of Athletics.
  • Endorses and supports other areas within the Dean of Students staff including attendance at all meetings and service on committees.
  • Interacts with all other college constituencies.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs summer duties and special projects as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of Elmhurst University.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience as an assistant coach in cross country and track and field, preferably in a small private college environment.
  • Familiarity with Division III athletics.
  • Recruiting experience at the collegiate level.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Well-developed communication skills and ability to discuss college programs and policies with a variety of prospective student audiences.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions (temperatures varying from below 32 degrees to over 90 degrees) for periods of over one hour, subject to hazards such as proximity to moving parts, electrical current, etc., and involves heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly in order to move objects. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders and lift 50 pounds. Must be willing to work overtime, including weekends, as required.
