Responsible for the lead role in coordination and preparation of key net revenue financial reports and financial statement valuations for the system level/division levels of UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC), using advanced technical expertise and/or financial modeling capabilities.
I. Major Responsibilities: 1. Assumes the lead role in supporting the system's/division's financial management and UMMHC senior management in the preparation and analysis of financial reports and statistics to management boards, administration and external organizations. 2. Assumes the lead role in collaborating with Financial Reporting Leadership to optimize efficiencies of the system towards the financial reporting process. 3. Assists in managing the monthly closing process, including preparation of interim and year-end financial reports. 4. Responsible for the financial development, review and analysis of monthly contractual allowances, third party settlements and payer revenue variance analysis. 5. Investigates and reports on current reimbursement developments on the State and Federal level. 6. Participates in the development of UMMHC management/financial information systems as they apply to net revenue reporting. 7. Seeks, pro-actively, new functionality, process improvements to simplify data collection, as well as monitoring system performance. 8. Assists in devising and recommending new or modified accounting systems to provide complete and accurate financial and statistical reports. 9. Coordinates system-wide financial and third-party audits. Reviews required records and files prepared by internal accountants for all UMMHC entities in preparation for external audit. Works closely with the auditors for interim, quarterly and annual audits. 10. Serving as subject matter expert, interprets and applies current financial reporting standards and ensures departmental compliance. 11. Develops, prepares and retains essential documentation to support external compliance requirements of various regulating agencies. This includes, but is not limited to, adherence with the filing requirements of the Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) and multiple agencies of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 12. Participates in performance improvement initiatives including compilation and interpretation of financial information for management decision making purposes. This includes trend analysis and interpretation and analysis of complex financial arrangements and business contracts. Identifies, communicates and resolves financial discrepancies. 13. Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations through a positive and professional approach to meeting the needs of internal and external customers. 14. Responds to multi-disciplinary customer demands. Standard Management Level Responsibilities: 1. Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities. 2. Develops and recommends the budgets for the areas managed. Manages activities to assure financial goals are met. 3. Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved. 4. Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives. 5. Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors. 6. Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc. 7. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations. 8. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements. 9. Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures. 10. Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department. 11. Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. 12. Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements. 13. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance. 14. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed. All responsibilities are essential job functions. II. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration. Preferred: 1. Master's degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration. 2. Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Experience/Skill: Required: 1. A minimum of eight (8) years recent accounting experience, including three (3) years in a supervisory capacity. 2. Demonstrated leadership experience. 3. Proficiency in PC based software applications. 4. Familiarity with data processing capabilities and procedures. 5. Must be highly motivated and dedicated professional who demonstrates a strong commitment to excellence, customer focus, and understands the importance of accountability. 6. Must have problem solving abilities, work independently and communicate effectively. 7. Able to manage high quality and exceptional customer service in a fast pace environment. 8. Some flexibility to work off-hours as required to deploy systems, work with IS for system testing, upgrade testing, support customers, resolution of production problems, and respond to system emergencies. Preferred: 1. Experience in a non-profit healthcare environment. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description.Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions: Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
