POSITION SPECIFICS

The Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium at Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, in Hershey, PA,is seeking an innovative and highly driven Lab Manager for the Pediatric Oncology Translational Research Lab (POTRL). This is a full-time on-site position.

The Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium (BCC) is an international clinical research sponsor and acts as a Contract Research Organization (CRO) of a network of 50+ hospitals that participate in BCC's investigator-initiated clinical trials. This POTR lab and lab manager position support the sample collection and management of BCC preclinical research.

Job Summary

BCC Additional Essential Functions:

* Overseeing Daily Operations: Manage the day-to-day activities of the lab, ensuring all procedures are executed efficiently and accurately.

* Staff Management: Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate lab technicians. Foster a collaborative and productive work environment.

* Quality Control: Implement and monitor quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of lab results.

* Compliance and Safety: Ensure the lab complies with all regulatory requirements and maintains necessary certifications including IACUC submissions. Implement and enforce health and safety protocols. Coordinates IACUC and IBC submissions, documentation and training for laboratory staff and research applications.

* Resource Management: Manage the lab's budget, inventory, and equipment maintenance. Ensure all instruments are calibrated, functional, and contracts are up to date. Manages ordering of laboratory supplies, chemicals and instrumentation.

* Policy Development: Lead, develop and implement laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols to optimize lab performance.

* Communication and Coordination: Facilitate communication between lab staff and other departments or external collaborators. Coordinate lab activities to support research and operational goals.

* Sample Coordination and Management specific to BCC Clinical Trials: Coordinates with clinical research sites and collaborators regarding collection and shipment of biological research materials and samples. This would include sample accessioning (intake and processing), cell culture and other biochemical assays.

* Participates in writing and submission of abstracts, manuscripts and grant applications as applicable.

Essential Functions

* Leads, supervises, administers, plans and supports the development and coordination of team members, process improvements, and supports testing operations.

* Teaches and develops direct reports to perform roles.

* Attends daily huddles and weekly leader huddles.

* Supports the development of solutions for complex problems based on facts, observations, experience and judgment. Escalates problems as needed. Coaches and develops direct reports to lead.

* Problem solving activities.

* Ensures the quality of testing throughout the Lab. Ensures quality issues are investigated and countermeasures are implemented to prevent reoccurrence. Ensures abnormal conditions or quality issues are documented and reported.

* Ensures continuous effort to identify sources of waste and develops plans to eliminate sources of waste.

* Provides input on the development of a long-range strategic plan relative to services, programs, human resources, capital needs and other resource requirements.

* Provides input to annual operations plan with departmental goals, dashboards, key activities, time lines, and resource requirements. Ensures input is clearly defined and understood by all team members and stakeholders.

* Works with the Lab and BCC leadership to develop and implement annual operating and capital budgets.

* Evaluates and counsels direct reports and team members relative to performance, conduct, attendance, and adherence to Core Lab policies and procedures.

* Develops a succession plan for each level of Core Lab team members and leadership.

* Ensures all requirements of applicable regulatory agencies (federal, state, local) are satisfied at all times.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Research Project Manager - Senior Professional, this position requires: Master's Degree 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None If filled as Research Project Manager - Advanced Professional, this position requires: Master's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $68,200.00 - $115,100.00.
