Carilion Clinic is a six-hospital health system located in beautiful Southwest Virginia. It is also affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and has numerous post-graduate training programs, including multiple medical and surgical residencies and fellowships.

Carilion is opening a new 12-bed Neuro ICU and a pharmacy specialist will be an integral part of the multidisciplinary team. The Neuro Critical Care Clinical Specialist will provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to critically ill adult patients in the neuro ICU to assure safe and effective drug therapy. The Neuro Critical Care Clinical Specialist will develop and maintain a clinical practice by participating in clinical rounds in adult ICU patient care areas. Activities include collaborating with members of the Neuro Critical Care team to develop policies and protocols that provide effective and efficient use of medications, providing consultation for other health care providers, educating patients and other health care providers, and reviewing and processing medication orders. Patient populations include non-traumatic brain injuries, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, seizure disorders, brain tumors, and neuromuscular conditions. Collaboration between neurology, neurosurgery, pulmonary critical care, and surgical critical care is anticipated. Similar to the model of other ICU specialist roles at Carilion, the pharmacist will follow patients on the neuro service line and may include the adjacent PCU. This position would also include relevant committee representation, staff education, and precepting pharmacy students. This position would be directly involved in precepting PGY1 pharmacy residents and PGY2 residents in relevant specialties.

Qualified candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and must possess a current Virginia pharmacist license or be eligible for licensure. An ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is required and specialized PGY2 residency training in Critical Care is preferred. Applicants must possess excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills, as well as demonstrate advanced skills in critical thinking and analysis. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.

What We Require:

Education: Must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).

Experience: ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency or three years of previous clinical pharmacy experience in a relevant care setting required for all new hires or transfers.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: License to practice Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia required within 90 days of hire. During the first 90 days of employment and the licensure application process, pharmacists without a valid license to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia may not perform duties restricted to a licensed pharmacist until the license is obtained. If the license is not obtained within 90 days of employment, the employee may be subject to separation from Carilion Clinic.

Other Minimum Qualifications:Must possess good leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills. Work requires knowledge of general office equipment and procedures including computer and keyboarding skills.All pharmacists must complete an Orientation Competency
