General Summary

The Research Assistant - Intern will support a Southern Research team member in executing daily operations of research projects. The Research Assistant - Intern will assist leadership in literature reviews and assist in the writing and editing of research papers. The Research Assistant - Intern will be responsible for assisting with study tracking and presentation of operational metrics. The Research Assistant - Intern will assist with developing, editing, and writing protocol documents along with submission of these documents to the Institutional Review Board (IRB).



This position is in-person and based in Birmingham, Alabama.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities



  • Maintain internal systems for study tracking, contacts, outreach efforts, and follow-ups
  • Developing, writing, and editing study specific documents and research papers
  • Conduct literature reviews for research papers
  • Assist with internal and external presentations on operational metrics and strategy implementation



Requirements/Minimum Qualifications


  • Current student in Alabama with interest in public health, communications, community engagement, or a related field.


  • Current student located in Alabama, pursuing a degree in public health, communications, or a related field


  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills


  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks


  • Interest in health equity and working with underserved communities


  • Must be able to report in-person



Preferred Qualifications


  • Strong interpersonal and soft skills.


  • Experience in community outreach or event planning.


  • Comfort with using tools like Microsoft Office for communication and documentation.


  • Familiarity with Clinical Research
  • Ability to communicate complex topics (e.g., health information or research participation) in clear, accessible language.


  • Demonstrated professionalism and reliability when working with external stakeholders.

Physical Demands

This position is typically located in an office environment. Occasional domestic travel is required. Position requires ability to work on a computer, sit, and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
