Lead Mechanic: CNC Burn Table Operator
Purpose:
Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanic - CNC Burn Table Operator to support operations at our site Norfolk, VA.
This role will require someone with a strong background in machine setup and troubleshooting and a commitment to teaching precision and efficiency. This role demands a hands-on approach to large-scale component manufacturing and a passion for knowledge-sharing within the team.
The position is located onsite in Norfolk VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production/operations. Position may require occasional travel.
Job Description:
- Lead a small crew (2-5) of department tradesmen assigned to the project under the direction of the Shop Foreman.
- Ensure that all work done on the vessel and in-house is completed on time, on budget, and to the contract quality standards.
- Provide training to new employees covering shop equipment and procedures.
- Provide ample notice of manpower needs and changes to the Shop Foreman.
- Hold the employees accountable for the established goals and check their progress to those goals on a frequent basis.
- Promote and confirm that all employees comply with the safety requirements, to include the necessary use of PPE.
- Assist in determining project physical progress.
- Maintain the vessel, shops, and surrounding areas in a clean and safe condition.
- Become familiar with all work-related documents such as drawings, manuals and question requirements that are not clear or appear to be in conflict.
- Develop and administer shift turnovers, provide daily feedback on shift performance to operators.
Additionally, position will:
- Program CNC burn tables by inputting cutting parameters and nesting designs using specialized software.
- Set up, calibrate, and operate burn table machines to cut and shape metals to prescribed dimensions and specifications.
- Load and unload materials onto the burn table, ensuring proper alignment and securing.
- Interpret work orders, engineering drawings, and blueprints to verify material specifications and cutting requirements.
- Monitor the cutting process, making real-time adjustments to torch settings for precision cuts.
- Inspect parts during and after production for quality control, accuracy, and conformity to customer requirements.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance such as sharpening tools, lubricating machines, and replacing worn parts.
- Troubleshoot and resolve machining or assembly problems in collaboration with engineers and production personnel.
- Maintain clear and accurate records of CNC operations, program modifications, and machine maintenance schedules.
- Accurately document production data, including job tracking, times, and materials used.
- Other duties may be assigned as workload requirements dictate.
Qualifications:
- Must have a High School diploma or equivalent and at least (7) seven years manufacturing experience within the trade.
- Must have experience programming and operating CNC burn tables including inputting cutting parameters and nesting designs using specialized software.
- Must be proficient in Autocad.
- Must have working knowledge of welding codes: AWS, MIL-STD, AISC, & ABS
- Ability to understand and apply knowledge of speeds/feeds of tools to optimize manufacturing cycle time and improve overall efficiency.
- Must have proficient knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade
- Must be able to work effectively with others
- Must be self-motivated and able to complete responsibilities with minimal direction
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous supervisory responsibilities.
- Working knowledge of Omniwin, Omni Bevel, ProNest and operating Messer MPCs.
- Overhead gantry crane and rigging experience.
- Strong understanding of metalworking and manufacturing techniques, with experience in 5-Axis machining.
- Technical degree or certification in CNC programming, machining, or a related field.
Travel Requirements:
- Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
- Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Frequent use of respirator.
