Job Description

The Assistant Director of New Student and Family Programs will lead initiatives and events for new students and their families for the University of Missouri - Kansas City. The Assistant Director will develop, manage, implement, and evaluate transition programs for freshman and transfer students, with a focus on supporting the university's strategic plan. The position assumes responsibilities for planning, coordinating, and supervising new student programming, including UMKC Parent and Family Programs, Roo Welcome, and other initiatives focused on integrating new students into the UMKC community. This position will work closely with the Division of Student Success and other campus partners to develop and implement new student programming strategies. The Assistant Director represents the university to students, families, and the general public.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide team leadership for the planning, development, and implementation of Roo Welcome which includes programming during the first 3 weeks of classes in both the Fall and Spring semesters;
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive assessment strategy for all transition programs to measure impact on student sense of belonging, engagement, and retention, and use findings to make data-driven improvements;
  • Provide supervision to student employees that assist with welcome and transition programs, including training, evaluating performance and motivating student employees to achieve individual and university goals;
  • Coordinate UMKC Parent & Family Programs, including parent & family communications, coordinating the UMKC Parent & Family Council, as well as other parent and family initiatives, to empower families as partners in student success;
  • Plan and implement UMKC Family Weekend;
  • Develop and coordinate involvement opportunities for new and continuing transfer students, addressing their unique transitional needs to support retention;
  • Work collaboratively with university partners, such as academic units and campus departments, as well as community partners and organizations;
  • Represent the Office of Student Involvement on university and/or community committees;
  • Manage program budgets effectively and in alignment with departmental priorities;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Shift

The position includes weekend and evening work. Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Manager for Student Engagement and/or Director of Student Involvement.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree strongly preferred in Higher Education, Educational Administration, Student Personnel Administration, etc.
  • 2-3 years of student involvement and/or new student programming preferred.
  • Supervision of student staff or advising of students and/or student organizations preferred.
  • Demonstrated willingness and commitment to working with students, families and university faculty/staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge and practice of student development theory to support student leadership and student involvement.
  • Experience with event planning and management, including contract negotiation and implementation.
Anticipated Hiring Range

$52,915.20 - $56,000 commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.
