This position is on site at our Cullowhee (or Biltmore) campus.

  • The Production Crew performs at a crew lead level in their area of expertise but works together with the rest of the crew in all areas of production to mount a professionally executed event or performance. Crew will exhibit leadership, and an ability to work independently. Crew requires significant knowledge of theatre practices, industry standard technology and gear, practical experience in the role that you are expected to occupy, and an understanding of basic safety protocols with strict adherence to them.
  • Areas of Specialization include:



  1. Sound: Works with the Technical Director to properly reinforce and amplify performers, create from a stage plot the most efficient method of mixing, setting mics, and running cable. They will work with Stage Management in the creation of the show schedule by providing necessary timing on audio cues. Must be able to adjust levels, frequencies, and adapt to new variables on the fly during the show. Must be able to lift at least 75lbs. Must be able to trace problems in complex systems.
  2. Lighting: Works with the Technical Director to provide superior lighting and necessary effects for each performance. They will design the looks and program the lighting console and operate during the show. They will work with Stage Management in the creation of the show schedule by providing necessary timing for Lighting cues. Must be able to modify programming on the fly during a show. Must be comfortable working in high places. Must be able to lift at least 75lbs. Must be able to trace problems in complex systems.
  3. Stage Management: Works with the Technical Director to make sure that the visiting company has all their show needs taken care of. They will work with the traveling technical staff to create a run of show schedule that incorporates all the technical elements and the performers. They are responsible for the stage to be prepared for each performance, this includes sweeping the stage and running a tech towel over the stage. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  4. Rigging/Stagehand: Works with the Technical Director to install flown set pieces, drapery, lighting, or any other object that has a safe anchor point. Duties include loading and unloading weight from the arbors on the loading trail, securing objects from their proper anchor points to our flown batons, operating the fly rail during the show, and participating in scene changes as necessary for the show. Must be able to life at least 75 lbs. Must be comfortable working in high places. Must maintain situational awareness in regards to all persons on the stage while operating the fly lines.


  • Dress Code:
    Work Calls: Pants and shirt that are not loose fitting or too tight. Closed toed shoes are the minimum required, however work boots with safety toe are recommended.
    Show calls: Show blacks are required for shows unless given specific instruction otherwise. Show blacks are defined as full length black pants, a black shirt, and black socks and shoes. Some events may require a more formal look, but for most shows black jeans and a t shirt will suffice.

  • This is not a weekly hourly position with a consistent schedule, crew will be called as the needs of the show require. If you are unable to attend due to class or prior commitment, we will do our best to accommodate. Should any schedule changes occur, you will be notified as soon as possible

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • A basic understanding of typical backstage theatrical practices. Occasionally lift, climb ladders and carry up to 50 lbs.; use basic tools (i.e. wrench, screwdriver). At the crew lead level an in depth understanding of that department.


Minimum Qualifications
Experience in backstage theatrical practices or Audio/ Video experience from the event world or similar.
