Position Description

Provides and/or coordinates care, management, wellbeing, and documentation of care to livestock at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center (TTEC). Works closely with the Texas Tech University (TTU) Animal Care Services veterinarians and faculty, staff, and students at the TTEC, and at the direction of the Executive Director of the TTEC. Duties will include but not limited to ensuring the daily feeding and watering, and health checks, care, and follow-up of all animals on the property. Adherence to robust safety practices and compliance with all applicable health and safe regulations including TTU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) requirements.

About the Department and/or College

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/afs/) at Texas Tech University exists to address the challenges of a growing and changing world. We tackle these challenges by empowering students, advancing discoveries, and disseminating knowledge. The department is housed in a modern research and teaching facility and is supported by several off-campus units (Equestrian Center, Equine Therapeutic Riding Teaching and Research Center, Grantham Companion Animal Research Facility, and an Agricultural Field Laboratory with canine, sheep/goat, swine, beef cattle, Burnett Center, and feed mill units). There are approximately 30 faculty members in the department, many of whom are leading researchers in their respective fields. Areas of research excellence include meat science and muscle biology, food science and safety, animal nutrition, health and welfare, and companion animal science. The department continues to experience historic student enrollment and now consists of more than 1,450 undergraduate and graduate students.

The Texas Tech Equestrian Center (TTEC) is a 100-acre teaching, research, and outreach facility that is home of the IHSA Texas Tech Equestrian Team, Horse Judging Team, Ranch Horse Team, Rodeo Team and Therapeutic Riding Teaching and Research Center. The facility offers an indoor arena with seating for approximately 650 people and 10 additional arenas, including an indoor and outdoor arena dedicated for Equestrian Team use. The Center maintains a horse herd of approximately 40 horses primarily used for teaching. The TTEC is located approximately 15 minutes from main campus and contains over 400 stalls on site for events, students, and outside boarders.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Be a team player in the TTU Equine Program.
  • Set and enforce high standards of ethics and values, performance, and exemplary behavior for Equine Program staff.
  • Responsible for helping develop and implement program protocols and procedures, and maintain program and TTEC-related records and reports regarding livestock management.
  • Design, plan, schedule, implement, and/or coordinate livestock management procedures, guidelines, and protocols for Equine Program related courses, events, projects, and activities, and related Animal Care Services and IACUC guidelines.
  • Assist the Equestrian Center Executive Director with the day-to-day strategic planning, operation, and management of all livestock at the TTEC to ensure program goals and objectives are met successfully while meeting the highest standard of care of livestock.
  • Assist Equine Program faculty, staff, and students with animal management.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with all Equine Program faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assist with coordination and management of livestock for events associated with the Equine Program to promote program success.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and minimum of two years of experience managing and handling livestock and providing for their care. Experience working in a large animal facility, animal research facility, or veterinary hospital. Experience driving a truck and animal trailer. Must have a valid Driver License.

Preferred Qualifications


  • M.S. in Animal Science or a closely related field.
  • Veterinary Technician certification.
  • Previous experience in managing and operating a large animal livestock program.
