What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a skilled Operations Research Engineer to lead the development of tools that drive process optimization through operations research (OR) techniques. In this role, you will design and implement algorithms, models, and in-house tools to enhance operational efficiency, while also supporting data analytics and dashboard development to provide actionable insights. This position requires expertise in OR, full-stack development, and analytical thinking to deliver impactful solutions. Based on Megafactory Lathrop, this role will operate in a fast-paced, demanding environment as part of a smart, agile, and highly motivated team.

What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, and maintain in-house tools (front-end and back-end) to support process optimization, leveraging OR techniques such as mathematical modeling, simulation, and algorithm development
  • Build and implement advanced algorithms and optimization models to solve complex operational challenges and improve efficiency across business processes
  • Create and maintain dashboards to visualize key metrics and insights, enabling data-driven decision-making to support optimization efforts
  • Create intuitive operator touchscreen interfaces and SCADA dashboards
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify operational bottlenecks, translate requirements into technical solutions, and ensure seamless tool integration
  • Develop discrete event simulations to model material flow processes, enabling analysis and optimization of operational workflows
  • Continuously refine tools and models by incorporating feedback, monitoring performance, and staying current with OR and development best practices

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Operations, Industrial, or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Strong experience in operations research, including optimization techniques, algorithm design, and mathematical modeling (e.g., linear programming, simulation, heuristics)
  • Proficiency in full-stack development, including front-end (e.g., JavaScript, React, HTML/CSS) and back-end (e.g., Python, Node.js, Java) technologies along with knowledge of DevOps practices or CI/CD pipelines)
  • Experience with data analytics tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL) and visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or custom solutions)
  • Familiarity with discrete event simulation tools (e.g., FlexSim, AnyLogic, Arena)
  • Familiarity with Ignition or other SCADA systems is a bonus
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with structured problem-solving methodologies (DMAIC, 8D, etc.) and SPC/OCAP development
