Job Summary
Under general direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor - Student Life, Campus Community, and Retention Services, the Executive Director, AS Business Management, Administration and Operations provides leadership, organizational planning, direction, and management through unit managers of Associated Students (ASUCD) and their diverse units. This position has significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals and determine strategies determined in partnership with ASUCD student leadership. The position has organization-wide impact through administration, fiscal management, operations, student advising and human resources management. Implements organizational goals and objectives for diverse and multi-dimensional units within the context of University and ASUCD goals. Analyze, implement policy, and evaluate long-range planning and operation of business management activities within ASUCD. Provide continuity and establish controls to proactively assess risk to ensure the University business practices are followed, thus protecting the integrity of ASUCD. Work closely on a daily basis with ASUCD student leadership to assist them with meeting their goals, developing their leadership skills, and representing the student body. Hires, staffs, supervises, and trains either directly or through others up to 1600 student employees and 41 full-time staff from diverse backgrounds. Oversee personnel practices that conform to the requirements of University policy, Federal regulations, and collective bargaining agreements including hiring, supervision, corrective action, and evaluation. Advise ASUCD student leaders on University organizational structures and provide general advice on ASUCD matters. Markets ASUCD to the general student body. The incumbent confers with and advises the Associate Vice Chancellor. The position establishes collaborative relationships and interacts extensively with system wide colleagues, department chairs, directors of administrative units, and students. - Bachelor's degree in Education, business, communication, humanities, social sciences, or related field and/or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
- Significant and progressively responsible experience serving leadership positions in higher education/student service. Leadership experience working in a college or university setting.Experience in fiscal management with emphasis on revenue-based budgeting through a wide variety of funding sources, developing and preparing budgets and financial reports, human resource management, policy development, and capital planning.
- Experience developing and implementing student centered programs for diverse student body.
- Management skills to supervise and oversee business and event management functions.
- Skills to communicate effectively and diplomatically with diverse groups of students, faculty and administrators, both individually and in group settings.
- Interpersonal skills and political acumen to interact with individuals of varying ages, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters and/or doctorate in Higher Education-Student Affairs Administration and Leadership or related field.
- Experience soliciting constructive input from and developing eventual consensus among groups and constituencies with differing priorities and perspectives; strong background in facilitating and cultivating collaborations among campus groups and departments.
- Very strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
- Experience working with/advising student government in a higher education setting.
- Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, gender identities, religions and sexual orientations.
- Leadership, conflict resolution and supervisory experience to support development and engagement of student employees and student leaders, as well as career staff.
- Mediation and counseling skills to help resolve conflicts.
- Analytical skills to evaluate programs and services, research future trends, develop long range goals, and implement changes in response to student needs.
- Excellent leadership abilities to oversee multiple departments through unit managers to establish metrics for department and employee goals.
- Thorough knowledge of human resources and risk management planning, accounting and payroll.
- Supervisory skills to recruit, select, train, assign, motivate and evaluate staff.
Key Responsibilities 70% - Administration and Fiscal Management
- Responsible for overall leadership, implementation, and management of the administrative services and general operation through direct oversight and through unit managers. ASUCD is a large department comprised of large and small highly specialized teams. This position has significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated organizational goals and objectives determined in partnership with ASUCD student leadership for diverse and multi-dimensional units within the context of University, community and ASUCD.
- In partnership with student leadership, exercises independent judgement and broad discretion to provide day-to-day management and direction, staff supervision, strategic planning, policy formulation, administration, security, data processing, assessment, space planning and operations.
- Determines objectives in partnership with student leadership, supports those directing programs, develops strategies and policies, manages human, financial and physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Proactively analyzes risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets, implements policy, and evaluates long-range planning and operation of business management activities within ASUCD.
- Determines strategies for programs with organization-wide impact and provides continuity and establishes controls to ensure the University business practices are followed, thus protecting the integrity of ASUCD.
- Develops, oversees and monitors department short-term and long-range budget plans, including plant management and capital needs.
- Monitors and controls processing on financial data to ensure that overall budgetary goals are achieved.
- Ensures that all elected student government actions are followed within the context of the University policy.
- Establishes operational systems and work plans to keep up-to-date computerized systems in each of ASUCD's units and ensures compliance to university and industry standards process for upgrades and repair.
- Approves individual unit specific policies to ensure that University policies are being followed and that policies represent the most efficient way of accomplishing individual unit goals.
- Oversees and manages complex/diverse commercial services to ensure an emphasis on customer service and sound business practices.
30% - Student Advising and Human Resources Management
- Works closely on a daily basis with ASUCD student leadership to assist them with meeting their goals, developing their leadership skills, and representing the student body.
- Advises ASUCD student leaders on University organizational structures and provides general advice on ASUCD matters.
- Interacts with higher-level management on potential confidential/sensitive matters, controversial situations and demonstrates ability to influence or persuade others.
- Markets ASUCD to the general student body.
- Hires, staffs, supervises, and trains either directly or through others up to 1600 student employees and 41 full-time staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Oversees personnel practices that conform to the requirements of University policy, Federal regulations, and collective bargaining agreements, including hiring, supervision, corrective action, and evaluation.

Department Overview ASUCD is an unincorporated association and an official unit of the University, operating under the authority of The Regents and by delegation the Chancellor. The Executive Director, AS Business Management, Administration and Operations interacts extensively with ASUCD leaders and campus administration. This body is the official representative for the undergraduate students on the campus. The Executive Director oversees approximately $18M operating budget for individual ASUCD units that encompass many complex large departments and 20+ smaller units.
