What You Will Do:

GFT is seeking a CEI Transportation Technician I to join our Transportation Team in Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Wilmington or Asheville, NC!

We oversee every construction phase to help ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the highest safety and quality standards.

What you'll be challenged to do:

  • Field Inspection & Compliance
    • Conduct daily, on-site inspection of contractor work for compliance with plans, specifications, and NCDOT standards.

    • Inspect various construction activities including grading, paving, drainage, utility relocation, traffic control, concrete placement, and bridge construction.

    • Monitor safety practices and report violations or unsafe conditions to the project team.

    Documentation & Reporting
    • Prepare Inspector's Daily Reports (IDRs), diaries, and photographic documentation to record project progress and issues.

    • Measure and document quantities of work completed for contractor payment verification.

    • Record test results and provide daily summaries of activities to the CEI Project Manager.

    Testing & Quality Assurance
    • Perform or observe on-site materials testing, including soil compaction, asphalt density, and concrete testing.

    • Verify that materials meet required certifications and specifications prior to installation.

    • Assist in sample collection and coordinate with materials laboratories as needed.

    Communication & Coordination
    • Maintain regular communication with the Project Manager, contractor personnel, DOT engineers, and fellow inspectors.

    • Participate in pre-construction and progress meetings when required.

Education | Experience:

What you'll bring to our firm:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to travel daily to job sites in company-provided or personal vehicle.
  • Basic understanding of construction methods, materials, and terminology.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering plans, blueprints, and construction specifications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting and coordination.
  • Willingness to work in varying weather conditions and outdoor environments.
  • Comfortable working in construction zones with exposure to traffic and heavy equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate degree or coursework in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Surveying, or related field.

  • Prior experience on NCDOT, municipal, or federally funded infrastructure projects.

  • Certifications such as:

    • ACI Field Testing Technician - Grade I

    • Nuclear Safety Certification

    • NCDOT Asphalt Testing Technician

    • Work Zone Safety Certification

  • Familiarity with NCDOT's Construction Manual and Standard Specifications.

Working Conditions:

  • Work in outdoor environment 95% of the time.
  • Moderate noise level.
  • Travel via automobile on daily basis.

Compensation:

The range for this position is salary range is $23.00 - $32.00. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
