Certified Dog Handler Specialist

Appointment Type: Seasonal Full Time

Overview:

This is a non-supervisory position that will provide a Level A avalanche rescue certified K9 team on the mountain as a primary handler. This position provides the resort with specialized K9's that perform avalanche rescue. This position is responsible for the care and transport of the K9 while at work. The K9 Specialist reports directly to the Director of Patrol, Ski Patrol Manager, and Avalanche Mitigation Manager. This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by the Solitude Ski Patrol Union.

Key requirements:
  • Must be employed as a Solitude Mountain Patroller
  • The ability and capacity to raise and train an avalanche rescue K9
  • Abide by the Solitude K9 agreement
  • Attained level A status as a dog team to WBR standards
  • Schedule coordinated with Secondary Handler (similar days)
  • Ski Patrol Level 2 or above


Duties:
  • Maintain a Level A certification based on Wasatch Backcountry Rescue (WBR) requirements
  • Properly document all K9 training
  • Perform a minimum of one drill per week
  • Organize setting up dog training drills in coordination with Dog Coordinator and manager.
  • Responsible for recruiting, finding, and developing secondary handler
  • Regular attendance to trainings to meet WBR standards is required
