Job Description

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Dental Laboratory Supervisor with a strong commitment to quality, service, and innovation. This role is ideal for someone who combines technical dental laboratory expertise, especially in digital technologies, with exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Supervise dental lab support staff, ensuring efficient day-to-day operations.
  • Perform quality assurance for laboratory cases, with a focus on minimizing remake rates.
  • Manage intake and processing of student lab work prior to prosthesis fabrication, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinate and verify the return of lab work from commercial labs, facilitating student access and clinical use (this includes logging in cases to necessary databases).
  • Maintain detailed records in electronic health record systems and related software, as related to laboratory work).
  • Correspond and communicate with commercial labs on cases sent and received.
  • Work with faculty and students to achieve optimal outcomes, particularly in complex cases.
  • Monitor and manage lab inventory, order supplies, and control material usage efficiently.
  • Monitor, manage, and utilize dental equipment. Perform periodic maintenance as needed, schedule and coordinate maintenance required by manufacturer, and recommend replacement of outdated or non-operational equipment.
  • Perform technical functions such as 3D printing, milling, and finalizing dental prostheses (including staining, glazing, sintering, and custom shading).
  • Educate and assist students in lab procedures and the use of digital instruments and technologies (including software).
  • Conduct annual staff performance evaluations and manage timesheets per university policy.
  • Execute additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Extensive experience in dental laboratory procedures, including digital workflows.
  • Strong background in supervisory or leadership roles within a lab setting.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Attention to detail, a proactive mindset, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • A customer-service oriented approach, especially in academic or clinical environments.
Anticipated Hiring Range

$55,000 - $70,000 annually, commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.
