What you will do

Johnson Controls is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer for our JCI-Synchrony Engineering team to support design and development of the mechanical portion of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) system. The mechanical system includes radial bearings, thrust bearings, and instrumentation. This individual will also help design assembly and test tooling and interact with the controls and software teams to ensure acceptable design of the AMB system. This position is onsite at our Salem, VA, facility. Candidates must be commuting distance, or able to relocate.

How you will do it

  • Maintain a safe working environment and a commitment to safety excellence.

  • Develop CAD models of components and devices in support of new product designs.

  • Develop and edit CAD models of existing production components to improve current products.

  • Develop and perform experimental programs to support the development of new products and improvement of existing products.

  • Assist with appropriate testing, utilizing company procedures, methodology and other experimental design tools, and generate test reports.

  • Regularly communicate relevant results with engineering staff, customers, and other stakeholders.

  • Maintain appropriate records of work performed on development programs.

  • Maintain adherence to JCI and Synchrony product design and development procedures.

  • Specify and select computational engineering tools in collaboration with other Engineering staff in order to improve current and/or future product development programs.

  • Support the manufacturing team and/or assembly technicians as requested or needed.

  • Participate on cross-functional teams that manage projects from concept through first article manufacturing process.

  • Solve difficult problems at the engineering and production levels.

  • Contribute to the intellectual property position of the company via invention and patent applications.

  • Help resolve problems associated with returned materials.

What you will need
Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.

  • Design of active magnetic bearings, rotating element bearings, or other forms of mechanical bearings.

  • Familiarity with design and/or operation of high-speed motors.

  • Design and/or operation of other products with high-speed rotating shafts such as turbomachinery.

  • 5+ years of experience in a product development environment, or an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering.

  • 3+ years' experience using 3D modeling software to design parts for fabrication and assembly (SolidWorks preferred.)

  • Some combination of both R&D and manufacturing experience.

  • Experience designing assemblies consisting of both mechanical and electrical/electronic components.

  • Possess working knowledge of GD&T or be able to learn as part of on-the-job training.

  • Utilize new design tools (e.g., software packages, experimental equipment.)
