Behavioral Health Technician

This position requires an active Secret clearance with eligibility for Top Secret/SCI.
As required by our governmental client, this position requires being a U.S. Citizen.

The Behavioral Health Technician will support military behavioral health operations by providing essential psychiatric care and administrative support services in clinical and operational settings. Working under the supervision of licensed mental health providers, this role is critical in helping assess, treat, and monitor patients with behavioral or psychological needs, while ensuring high standards of care and mission readiness across the military community.

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Behavioral Health Technician: $
Pay commensurate with experience.

Behavioral Health Technician Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform initial behavioral assessments including mental status exams, substance use evaluations, and psychological testing under provider supervision.
  • Conduct or assist in treatment and rehabilitation plans for patients in accordance with Defense Health Agency (DHA) policies.
  • Support individual and group counseling sessions, therapeutic communities, and related behavioral interventions.
  • Provide patient education focused on identifying and understanding mental health issues.
  • Observe and monitor patient behaviors; document and report patient progress and any significant events.
  • Implement safety protocols to prevent self-harm or injury, including suicide prevention measures.
  • Record and monitor vital signs; support nursing and clinical tasks as needed.
  • Coordinate care with community, military, and government agencies to support treatment and case management.
  • Assist in making or arranging patient referrals to other mental health resources and agencies.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation, reports, and medical records according to policy.

Behavioral Health Technician Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities Requested:

Education:

  • Certificate (Level 2) or Associate's Degree.
  • Graduate of an accredited Psychiatric Technician Program OR completion of equivalent education and experience as defined by the American Association of Psychiatric Technicians.

Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or Red Cross (must be current and maintained).

Experience:

  • 2 years of experience as a Behavioral Health Technician post-graduation.
  • Acceptable alternatives include:
    • Prior military experience as a Behavioral Science Specialist/Technician.
    • Completion of an Armed Forces psychiatric technician training program.
    • Equivalent civilian training in behavioral health patient care.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Proficiency in basic psychological assessment procedures and documentation.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently for effective communication with medical staff and patients.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working with diverse military and civilian populations.
  • Competence in using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with behavioral health terminology, crisis protocols, and HIPAA regulations.

  • Team-oriented, professional, and able to build strong collaborative relationships.
  • High attention to detail and organizational capability for documentation and care coordination.
  • Emotional maturity, tact, and sound judgment in challenging and high-stress environments.
