Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The role of the Environment, Health and Safety ( EHS) department is primarily environment, health and safety functions at the University. In support of the University's core mission, EHS will provide comprehensive environmental, health and safety services to the University community. This includes education through training and consultation, maintaining a safe environment through recognizing and controlling health and safety hazards, ensuring a process of regulatory compliance and minimizing future potential liabilities. By developing EHS programs and performing various periodic inspections we can provide a safe work place, ensure a process of compliance and minimize future potential liabilities. EHS is organized into eight (8) sections: Biological Safety, Environmental Affairs, Fire Safety & Emergency Response, Occupational & Environmental Hygiene, Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, Workplace Safety and Business & Support.
Position Summary
This position is designed to be a learning opportunity for a student interested in stormwater and environmental compliance. It will provide hands-on experience in stormwater along with the University's environmental inspection, permitting and regulatory compliance programs. The position will work towards learning to identify and possibly solve complex environmental problems related to surface water quality and stormwater permitting compliance with oversight from the environmental management workgroup. This position will work closely with Environmental Specialists to gain experience in planning, preparing, coordinating, and facilitating the implementation of UNC-CC's Phase II NPDES Stormwater Permit. Position will have opportunity to gain knowledge and experience with performing on-going inspections for the erosion and sedimentation control practices used at all UNC-CH construction sites under the supervision of the environmental workgroup. The position will assist in implementing UNC-CH's stormwater management program, including surface water sampling and illicit discharge investigations plus associate date management and required reporting to environmental regulatory agencies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School. Technicians are trained in the applicable laws or inspection procedures through some combination of classroom and on-the-job training.
