Essential Job Duties |
The
Dermatology Service at
North Carolina State University (NCSU) is seeking a motivated and team-oriented
Research Specialist to join our
Dermatology team.
We are engaged in innovative research programs dedicated to understanding the causes and developing treatments for skin diseases in animals, with translational relevance to human medicine. Our efforts are highly collaborative, particularly across the fields of
neuroscience and
immunology, which enhances the depth and impact of our work.
The mission of the Dermatology Service is threefold:
- To conduct impactful basic and translational research.
- To investigate disease mechanisms and evaluate therapeutic approaches through clinical trials.
- To train veterinary students and house officers in clinical and research methodologies within the field of dermatology.
Job Duties
- Independently design, perform, and analyze cellular and molecular biology experiments.
- Maintain detailed and organized research records; analyze data and assist in the preparation of grant proposals and scientific manuscripts.
- Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot novel research methods and techniques.
- Conduct literature and database reviews to support experimental design and protocol development.
- Manage and maintain blood biobanks and associated sample inventories.
- Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, including compliance with laboratory safety, equipment maintenance, inventory management, supply ordering, and expense tracking.
- Instruct and train students, interns, residents, and faculty in research procedures, protocols, and equipment usage.
- Assist with clinical trials, including IACUC protocol preparation, clinical data collection, and the processing, storage, and analysis of samples.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Experience with protein analysis and molecular biology techniques including PCR and RNA/DNA extraction.
- Exceptional organizational skills and strong attention to details.
- Foundational knowledge in immunology, molecular biology, and cell biology.
- Ability to present summaries of research results in oral and written format.
- Ability to present basic laboratory information to new lab personnel. Maintains and organizes required documentation of research data. Ability to write research protocols for grant publication preparation and publication.
- Ability to search literature demonstrating an understanding of scientific, experimental and/or research theory to assist in the design of methods, procedures and/or techniques.
- Ability to identify data to be collected and documented. Ability to identify resources needed to conduct experiments.
- Ability to monitor and report quality control measures.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Extensive hands-on experience with molecular biology, cell culture and histopathology techniques including (but not limited) to:
DNA/RNA isolation PCR, including quantitative PCR
- Gel electrophoresis
- Cloning and transfection
- Cell culture (growing and maintaining various cell lines and establishing primary cell culture)
- ELISA
- Ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with laboratory assays.
- Experience with MS Word, Excel and basic software programs (eg basic graphing and statistical programs).
