Position Description
TechSource is seeking a Principal Electrical Systems Architect to join the Advanced Sources and Detector (ASD) Project team in support of the design, integration, and operational readiness of the Scorpius ~20 MeV linear induction accelerator, used for subcritical experiments at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). This role is intended for a highly experienced technical leader with deep domain expertise in electrical engineering and system integration within accelerator or high-energy physics environments.
The successful candidate will provide strategic technical oversight, lifecycle system engineering leadership, and cross-disciplinary mentoring across the accelerator's electrical systems. This position also requires extensive collaboration with national laboratories, vendors, and internal teams to ensure delivery of high-reliability, compliant, and innovative electrical solutions in high-voltage, high-radiation environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as the principal technical authority across all electrical and control subsystems of the Scorpius accelerator.
Provide system-level architecture, integration strategy, and optimization for complex electrical and pulsed power systems.
Lead the design, specification, and implementation of high-voltage, magnet power, I&C, vacuum control, and diagnostic systems.
Conduct formal design and hazard reviews in compliance with DOE, NEC, UL, and national safety standards.
Serve as technical mentor and coach to electrical engineering staff, guiding detailed design and implementation efforts.
Collaborate directly with national lab teams (LANL, LLNL, SNL), ensuring project alignment and knowledge transfer across organizations.
Oversee and validate the procurement, commissioning, and system performance qualification of integrated accelerator electrical systems.
Lead root-cause investigations and high-impact troubleshooting of electrical system failures or anomalies.
- Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field (Ph.D. strongly preferred).
- 20+ years of experience in electrical system design and integration for accelerators, fusion devices, pulsed power, or equivalent high-energy platforms.
- Proven track record of technical leadership in cross-functional, multi-organizational project teams.
- Demonstrated expertise in:
- Pulsed power systems
- Magnet and power supply design
- PLC controls and I&C integration
- Analog/RF signal processing
- Low-level signal detection and grounding/isolation techniques
- Vacuum systems and radiation-hardened electronics
- In-depth knowledge of NEC, NFPA-70E, UL, and relevant DOE and NNSA standards for nuclear and high-voltage environments.
- Experience with electrical and controls system lifecycle management, including requirements engineering, verification, and validation.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical and electrical documentation tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior contributions to linear induction accelerators or advanced particle beam systems.
- Experience working at NNSA laboratories (LANL, LLNL, SNL, etc.).
- Active or previous DOE Q clearance strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with high-radiation, cryogenic, or other extreme operating environments.
- Recognized subject matter expert with technical publications or patents in related fields.
