Overview

The Mechanical Inspector will support LAWA's Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within LAWA's Capital Improvement Program.
*Candidates must possess a current ICC certification as Commercial Mechanical Inspector to apply.
*Preferred candidates are those with additional ICC certifications as Electrical and Plumbing Inspector.
*Successfully hired Candidates must provide Proof of Cal-OSHA 30 hr. training within the last 4 years,prior to assignment.
*Successfully hired candidates must have LAWA SIDA badge prior to official start.
*Must be able to work any assigned shift - day, swing, or night - as required to meet the contractor'sconstruction schedule.



Responsibilities

    Inspects the construction of a wide variety of airport improvements and utilities projects to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, agreements for work, and may provide construction inspection support.
  • Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and project specifications, review and interpret construction documents including blueprints and shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
  • Demonstrates strong proficiency in preparing comprehensive daily inspection reports that clearly document the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW of all observed construction activities, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and accountability in tracking progress and identifying issues, deficiencies, or safety concerns in a timely manner.
  • Verify contractor compliance with local and national electrical codes (e.g., NEC, NFPA 70, 70E, 72), mechanical and plumbing codes, and LAWA-specific standards.
  • Track and document time-and-material work, field changes, and job quantities
  • Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values.
  • Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third-party agencies as needed
  • Perform inspections of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) installations including, but not limited to:
    • Domestic Water and Sewage Systems
    • Venting, fire sprinklers, and gas piping
    • HVAC systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, ductwork)
    • Smoke Control Systems
    • Mechanical ventilation and exhaust
    • Fire and life safety integration (e.g. smoke dampers)
    • Mechanical and plumbing shutdowns, lockout / tagout procedures
    • Commissioning and balancing reports
    • Underground utilities and duct banks
    • High-voltage switchgear and electrical panels
    • Conduit racks, conductors, and grounding systems
    • Interior and exterior lighting systems
    • Fire life safety systems including smoke/heat detectors and FM-200 suppression systems
    • Electrical shutdowns, lockout/tagout procedures, and breaker coordination
  • Inspect IT infrastructure installations such as:
    • Low-voltage systems (voice/data, security, access control)
    • Door card readers, security cameras, and public address (P.A.) systems
    • Communication cabling and equipment rooms


Qualifications

Professional Experience Level/Minimum Qualifications

  • Mechanical inspection staff shall have 3 years or more experience performing mechanical inspections for Building Construction.
  • Mechanical inspection staff possess a thorough knowledge of the materials and methods used in the installation of plumbing, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration installations.
  • Current ICC Certification as a Commercial Mechanical.
  • Proof of Cal-OSHA 30 hr. training within the last 4 years.
  • Fall protection and harness training.
  • Confined Space Entry Training.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Additional Current ICC certifications as Electrical and Plumbing Inspector
  • NFPA 70E standards training within the last 3 years is preferred.
  • Training & knowledge of NFPA -70, 70E, & 72 is preferred.
  • Experience at the journey-level as an electrician, with a focus on the installation and repair of electrical systems in public works, institutional, commercial, or industrial settings.
  • Plumbing experience (journeyman/master level) with progression into inspection.
  • Experience inspecting mechanical systems of large-scale commercial, industrial or public buildings.
  • Experience overseeing and ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations on significant construction projects.
  • Involvement in complex projects that require coordination with multiple stakeholders, includingcontractors, engineers, and city officials.
  • Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies, ensuring that all aspects of construction meet the required standards.
  • Must be open to learning the prescriptive items required by the agency.
  • A strong understanding of diverse code requirements.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.

Hardware/Software Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Project Management Information Software used for inspection/document control (i.e., Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PM Web, Adobe Pro, Bluebeam, etc.).
  • Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic equipment for contract documents efficiently, including change orders, submittals, RFIs, and other inspection documents, with minimal supervision.

Education/Training

* High school diploma (or equivalent).

Wage Data Per State Requirements

Pay range for this position is $67.89/hr - $87.85/hr. The starting pay will be commensurate with skill, education, experience, and working environment.
