Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities
Job Description

As a DevOps Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of revolutionizing our core Aireon service components. Dive into the requirements, design, and implementation of cutting-edge infrastructure. Be a key player in transforming our environment into a secure, efficient, scalable, and automated powerhouse.

Aireon is seeking someone to join our dynamic engineering team. In this role, you will deploy, configure, maintain, and secure network and infrastructure resources in both cloud and on-prem environments. You will collaborate across the company with Software Developers, Operations, Architecture, Project Management, and Sales. You will work closely with the Operations team to investigate production incidents. You will sharpen your skills in DevOps and cloud technologies while managing critical systems and contributing to safer air travel.

What You'll Do

  • Administer multiple Kubernetes clusters and other infrastructure software components, performing installation, user management, troubleshooting, upgrades, etc.
  • Support software developers to create development environments, set up cloud and on-prem infrastructure, and perform integration during product integration, deployments, and system testing.
  • Support production environments and products and assist customer onboarding and management. Some after-hours support may be required, which may include on-call support.
  • Support a unified set of practices and tools, ensuring infrastructure changes are safe, consistent, and reusable.
  • Improve automation and resolve operational issues as they arise.
  • Manage infrastructure performance improvements.


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions in ambiguous situations and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Two or more years of experience deploying, maintaining, and optimizing Kubernetes clusters (AKS preferred).
  • Two or more years of experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), e.g. Terraform
  • Understand the importance of security while implementing infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of deploying highly scalable, mission-critical, zero-downtime solutions.
  • Experience with networking and security configurations for cloud and hybrid on-prem systems.
  • Proficiency in at least one high-level scripting language (PowerShell, Python, Bash, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with application performance monitoring tools such as Azure Monitor, Datadog, Prometheus, or Grafana.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems.
  • Working experience in troubleshooting cloud services (preferably Azure).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.



Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in regulated, safety-critical environments.
  • Proficiency with a programming language such as C#, Python, Go, JavaScript, Node.js.
  • Experience deploying data streaming solutions using tools like Kafka, Pulsar, NATS.io, or Solace PubSub.
  • Working experience with cybersecurity standards and practices such as NIST.

1-3-6-12 Month Plan

In the first month we'll expect you to...

  • Get onboarded and train with your manager.
  • Get acclimated into the role.
  • Understand the tools and different stakeholders.
  • Perform basic technical administration tasks while gaining familiarity with engineering processes and relevant projects.



At 3 months we'll expect you to...

  • Participate in project meetings and technical discussions.
  • Take initiative to collaborate across different departments.
  • Have reviewed key architecture, requirements and other technical documentation to gain high-level familiarity with the Aireon system.
  • Start reviewing source code repositories to gain familiarity with key Aireon components.
  • Take on increasing levels of responsibility and tasks of increasing technical complexity.



At 6 months we'll expect you to...

  • Take ownership and responsibility for assigned work.
  • Work independently and/or collaborate as necessary as appropriate.
  • Troubleshoot functional and performance issues with components and overall infrastructure.
  • Provide the Operations team with tier 2 technical support.


At 12 months we'll expect you to...

  • Provide technical leadership and expertise to projects and within the company.
  • Lead operational improvements (e.g. observability, monitoring, deployment, etc.)
  • Provide infrastructure cost optimization recommendations.
  • Find and implement automation opportunities.
  • Continue to improve system security and reliability.
  • Support architects in planning and resource/performance optimizations.



About the Team

  • You will play a critical role in the Product Development Team.
  • The Product Development Team develops and operates secure and reliable products for internal and external customers. The team shares responsibility for customer satisfaction, faster delivery, and profitability.
  • The Product Development Team is responsible for translating customer requirements and business objectives into product and sprint backlogs, designing a robust software and infrastructure architecture to support the product goals, creating technical roadmaps, planning product releases, and improving the efficiency of people and processes, leading to faster and reliable deployment.
  • We follow the Scrum methodology and work on 2-3 week sprints.
  • We leverage collaboration tools to connect remotely with team members and stakeholders.
  • Most team members are in the Washington, DC area, with external consultants in Canada and throughout the US.
  • Local team members (VA/DC/MD) are on a hybrid schedule. Hybrid team members are expected to be on-site 2-3 days a week.
