SUMMARY OF DUTIES Manages the Material Science Laboratory operations with a supervisory capacity.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED 1. Manages the lab to ensure that resources are provided to meet global Merit material science needs and department objectives. 2. Creates and maintains the laboratory project submission system that is optimized for generation of customer projects and project tracking. 3. Responsible for overseeing the execution of material assessments in support of MDR regulatory filings. 4. Manages diverse priorities within the lab with assistance from the Director or Senior Manager. 5. Plans and schedules work for the laboratory group to ensure proper distribution of assignments and workload to ensure projects are completed in an effective and efficient manner. 6. Manages department personnel by interviewing, training, evaluating job performance, disciplining, scheduling work and other related responsibilities. 7. Creates, validates, and ensures maintenance of test procedures and methods for equipment used to assess material properties such as FTIR, SEM, rheometer, DSC, TGA, etc. 8. Designs, purchases, and/or procures laboratory test equipment, materials, and supplies. 9. Trains laboratory personnel on all equipment and procedures. 10. Ensures quality and accuracy of written test procedures and reports. 11. Sets and implements standards for lab organization, cleanliness, and safety. 12. Assists with the budget process. 13. Ensures employees follow industry standards and safety regulations, including handling and disposing of test samples and waste chemicals. 14. Contributes to laboratory design, particularly as organizational and functional needs change. 15. Performs other duties and tasks as required. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS * Lifting -- Not to exceed 50 lbs. - local practice may apply. * Writing * Sitting * Standing * Bending * Visual acuity * Color perception * Depth perception * Reading * Field of vision/peripheral SUMMARY OF MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in material science and engineering, chemistry, biomedical engineering, or related engineering or scientific discipline * Minimum years of related experience, with at least five years in a supervisory capacity o BS: 8 years o MS: 3 years o PhD: 1 year * Knowledge of and ability to apply principles of supervision. * Thorough understanding of experimental methods and validation. * Excellent presentation and writing skills. * Ability to independently apply analytical skills, complex scientific technical principles, detailed knowledge in solving engineering problems and developing new techniques. * Demonstrated ability to train and mentor subordinates in complex material assessments involving numerous analytical methods: DSC, TGA, SEM/EDS, XRF, FTIR, Raman, Rheology, Surface Chemistry. Experience in LC/UV-Vis, LC/MS, or GC/MS is also desired. * Demonstrated computer skills preferably spreadsheets, word processing, databases, and other applicable software programs. * Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to work effectively as a team member. * Working knowledge of United States and international standards as applicable to the department.
