Primary Responsibilities

HDR's Bridge Engineer will: serve as a project manager, technical leader, or a task leader for bridge engineering projects of varying sizes and complexity; perform structural design and detailing of bridge structural components (superstructure, substructure, and foundation components) for new, widening, and replacement structure projects, structural design and detailing of earth retaining structures (Retaining Walls, Culverts, Soldier Piles, Mechanically Stabilized Earth, Ground Anchors), as well as structural design and detailing of overhead sign and signal mast arm structures; select standard bridge engineering/design procedures, develop structural details using specialized structural design and analysis software, perform structural load calculations, and assist with geometric layout; perform structural and feasibility analysis required for advanced planning and type selection studies and prepare related reports and technical memorandums; supervise, assign and review work performed by junior engineers and technical staff; perform analysis, design, and detail of various structural materials such as Concrete and Structural Steel, and others; assist with the development of scope of work and level of effort for projects and/or assignment within discipline; perform assessment and retrofit and rehabilitation of existing bridges, including movable bridges; produce and revise bridge material quantities, cost estimates, and specifications; produce and revise construction documentation and perform project site visits during construction; coordinate with subconsultants to keep projects on schedule and within budget and manage day-to-day communication (verbal and written) with the client; and implement procedures and oversee use of project quality control plan.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and 3 years of experience in bridge engineering or a Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and 5 years of experience in bridge engineering.
  • Required experience must include experience in: analysis and design of new and existing bridge structures; analysis and design of retaining walls and other ancillary structures; design of non-structural components related to bridge structures; evaluation and design of bridge structures for dynamic forces; modeling and analysis of both shallow and deep foundation systems; LEAP Bridge Enterprise; Bluebeam Revu; FBMultiPier; AASHTOWare Bridge; MDX, Descus, Merlin Dash or similar software; spColumn; OpenBridge Designer and OpenBridge Modeler; LARSA 4D; CSiBridge; MathCAD; and AutoCAD.
  • Accepting licensed and non-licensed candidates. Professional Engineer licensure is not a prerequisite for the position.
