Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University Department of Environmental and Occupational Health is looking for a Senior Research Assistant to join our molecular epidemiology and microbiome research group. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team on a wide range of microbial genomic, epidemiologic, and microbiome research projects.

Our team uses innovative, multi-disciplinary methods to:

  • Isolate and characterize bacteria associated with mucosal inflammation and reproductive health in humans;
  • Develop novel strategies (such as live biotherapeutics) for the prevention and treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases in the respiratory, urogenital, and gastrointestinal tract;
  • Evaluate the role of host-associated microbial communities on transmission of antibiotic-resistant pathogens and on host susceptibility to colonization and infection; and
  • Quantify the drug-resistant human infections that arise from antibiotic overuse in agriculture.


Responsibilities include:

  • Manage workflow of microbiome and molecular epidemiologic studies, including sample tracking, processing, and preparation of sequencing libraries.
  • Develop and implement new laboratory research protocols (e.g., bacterial culturing, in vitro experiments, and DNA/RNA sequencing) and data analysis methods with guidance from the PI and collaborators.
  • Participate in general lab activities, such as inventory, equipment maintenance, and lab clean-up.
  • Contribute to IRB and study protocol preparation and submission, CDC permit application preparation and submission, and grant reports with guidance from the PI.
  • Assist with sample and data collection for ongoing human microbiome studies, including recruitment, screening, consenting, clinical sample collection, and interactions with study subjects, such as collecting survey data.
  • Assist with literature reviews and topic searches.
  • Compile data and perform preliminary data analysis from stewardship and microbiome research projects under guidance from PI and in collaboration with bioinformaticists from the research team.
  • Assist with the preparation of manuscripts and presentations.

The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS and 1 year of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

The successful candidate will have experience with epidemiological and microbiological research (e.g., culture-based and molecular methods), will be organized, self-motivated, able to work independently and with a team, and will be able to manage his/her time across multiple projects.
Hiring Range $18.06 - $27.52
