Position Summary: This position is responsible for pipe welding equipment, parts, interiors and exteriors of ships, and shipyard buildings at our vast, 63-acre facility.
Detailed Description:
- Follows directions under intermittent supervision.
- Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
- Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits.
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade.
- Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals.
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using TIG, GMAW, FCAW and/or MIG.
- Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors.
- Use fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies.
- Gouge metals, using the air-arc gouging process.
- Diagnose and solve problems of all kinds.
- Troubleshoot problems with all equipment as it arises.
- Proper storage of equipment.
- Ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
- Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
- Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
- Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
- Ability to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.
- Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing.
- May be assigned miscellaneous tasks outside craft as required.
- Attendance is an essential function of the job.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Be able to pass ABS test in FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding)
- Must be able to pass an ABS 6G open root and/or backing ring TIG on carbon and/or stainless steels
- A self-starter who can work with minimal supervision on an 8 for 8 basis
- Ability to work in inclement weather
Desired Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience preferred
- Prior shipyard experience a plus
- Bilingual language skills (oral & written) a plus
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction / repair
