Corrections Officer
Washington County, located in West Bend Wisconsin currently has a great opportunity as a full-time Corrections Officer within the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
Under the general direction of the Corrections Administrator, Lieutenant, and Shift Sergeant, selected candidates will perform work involving the care and custody of inmates within the Washington County Jail. Responsibilities include, supervising inmates within established policies and procedures, maintaining discipline, enforcing rules and regulations pertaining to the facility and maintaining detailed daily Jail activity reports, monitoring inmates' scheduled work, court, and medical appointments.

Qualifications:
*Must be a citizen of the United States.
*Must be 19 years of age.
*A High School Diploma or equivalent.
*No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
*Maintain good physical condition with weight proportioned to height.
*Possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license with vision correctable to 20/20.
*The ability to distinguish colors and the ability to detect varying sound levels.
*While on -duty or representing the Office in any official capacity; visible tattoos will be in good taste and will not be offensive.
*Successfully pass an occupational lift test with a minimum requirement of 75 lbs., audiogram and drug screening prior to employment.
Preferred, but not mandatory:
*An Associate's Degree or 60 college credits from an accredited technical school, college, or university in criminal justice or related field and/or two or more years of work experience as a Corrections Officer or similar position within a County Jail, State Correctional Facility, or Federal Correctional Facility and/or; two or more years of military experience and Veteran status defined by Chapter 45.
Training Provided:
*Basic Jail Officer Training - 200 hour state certification program.
*Co-Located Juvenile Detention Training - 24 hour state certification program.
*Twelve (12) weeks on the job field training
*Annual in-service training to maintain state certification - A minimum of 24 hours annually in topics such as CPR, Suicide Prevention, Professional Communication Skills, Principles of Subject Control, TASER Certification, etc.
Merit Based Salary (reviewed annually):
*Starting annual: $63,211.20 - $75,051.20 annually assuming full-time hours worked (pay is hourly at $30.39 - $34.64). Pay is commensurate with experience.
Position Summary: Under the general direction of the Corrections Administrator (Corrections Captain), Lieutenant, and Shift Sergeant, performs work involving the supervision, care, and custody of inmates in County detention facilities, and other duties as required.
Duties/Responsibilities: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
*Supervises and cares for inmates in County detention facilities (Adult & Juvenile) within established policies and procedures.
*Provides for ongoing safety, security and sanitation of all inmates, at all times.
*Provides a positive rehabilitative influence to inmates within guidelines established by the Department.
*Be familiar with community resources and Jail programming for inmate referrals as necessary.
*Maintains discipline and enforces the rules and regulations pertaining to the facility through effective use of communication skills.
*May employ force and trained security tactics to quell disturbances and maintain discipline.
*Prepare and present written and oral reports as required.
*Receives and books inmates into the jail; and assigns and escorts inmates to cells, dormitories, or similar areas.
*Maintains a detailed daily Jail activity report, monitoring inmates' scheduled court and medical appointments.
*Completes detailed verification of physical and health condition of inmate at initial intake.
*Verifies wanted/warrant checks on inmates with Communications Officers.
*Submits fingerprint cards, forwards disposition forms to District Attorney's Office, files disposition forms and incoming rap sheets, notify the District Attorney on custody inmates.
*Fingerprints civilians, as required for passports, citizenship and government employment.
*Collect DNA samples for dissemination to the State Crime Lab.
*Conducts inmate releases, as ordered by the court, conducting and documenting necessary release needs and procedures.
*Conducts regular security checks via data recorder checks and documentation.
*Observes inmate behavior and documents any information relevant to the inmates' confinement in the computer files.
*Completes violation reports of Jail rules along with documentation of inmate activities on computer.
*Inspects and searches inmates and their quarters for cleanliness, contra-band, and order.
*Investigates all fire and door alarms in all secure jail areas.
*Performs evacuation procedures, including search and rescue functions, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus as required.
*May administer basic first-aid and CPR, as needed.
*Maintains strict security Standard Operating Procedures for all personnel entering jail secure areas.
*Performs general housekeeping and maintenance duties in the facility as needed, and inspects areas for damage.
*Routinely inspects of all fire and door alarms and all locking mechanisms.
*Supervises housekeeping cleanliness throughout facility. Supervises inmates' cleanliness by supplying a schedule for access to cleaning supplies.
*Assigns, supervises and inspects the work of inmate workers engaged in maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities or assigned in laundry and kitchen areas.
*Issues uniforms, bedding, supplies, and assists in the operation of the food service facilities.
*Supervises laundry and uniform changes as designated by Standard Operating Procedure.
*Verifies Huber inmate job placements; coordinate requirements with inmate and employer.
*Verify and assign hours out for employment, appointments, child care or schooling, and record schedules in computer program.
*Distributes Jail commissary and verify inmates' signatures on receipts.
*Inventories necessary Jail operating supplies, monitor use of supplies and notify supervisor to order if necessary.
*Follows exacting disciplines protecting the constitutional rights of all inmates.
*Performs other duties as assigned.
Interaction: There is significant interaction with other law enforcement agencies, County Departments, the District Attorney's Office, the court system, and the general public.
Essential Knowledge and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the operation and purpose of detention facilities and of the related treatment and security programs used at such facilities. Working knowledge of the rules, regulations, and statutes pertaining to the custody and discipline of inmates. Working knowledge of the basic principles of first-aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Ability to handle difficult and complex incidents occurring within the facility within established legal and procedural guidelines. Ability to assume and to carry out considerable responsibility within established guidelines and with limited supervision. Ability to recognize various types of inmate behavior and to supervise and control inmates and secure their cooperation. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, other employees, and the public. Ability to follow written and oral instructions, to prepare accurate records and to prepare oral and written reports. Ability to effectively present recommendations to supervisors. Successfully achieve a passing grade and finish all training classes, courses, or seminars required by the State or the department. Ability to accept and carry out all orders, remain calm, and control emotions under stress. Good judgment and the ability to think and act quickly. Ability to develop skills to a practical level before the end of probation period. Able to fulfill physical demands of job, sensory demands (seeing and hearing), and cognitive demands (concentration, conceptualization, memorization).
Working Environment and Physical Demands: Work is performed within the Washington County Jail which requires safety, security, order, and control, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Corrections Officers work rotating schedules that could include day, night, weekends and holidays. Work requires the ability to function in confined spaces, perform unique functions which can be both physically and mentally demanding. The position requires a full range of motor/physical skills and physical strength to handle any situation that may arise with the inmate population.
