Science, Mathematics & Technology roles encompass a broad spectrum of STEM expertise dedicated to the SRS mission operations support, scientific research, technical applications, advancement of scientific principles, mathematics, and statistical applications. Professionals in this field may conduct research, analyze data, perform laboratory methods in support of critical missions, and develop theories to solve complex problems in areas such as physics, chemistry, hydrogeology, environmental science, biology, and mathematics.

Discipline Description

Scientists perform data management, evaluation and reporting associated with scientific data including radioactive and non-radioactive constituents in a wide range of media types. They can specialize in various fields of expertise in reporting of physical, chemical, and biological environs, provide oversight and guidance to technical personnel that perform science applications. Laboratory scientists oversee and perform specialized radiological and chemical analyses in support of SRS critical missions in the areas of Radiochemistry, Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Compliance and DOE Orders. This includes but is not limited to, troubleshooting, improving, and reviewing/reporting analytical data, processes, and methodology. Some responsibilities include overseeing the technical performance of methods performed by analysts or field specialists. Other responsibilities include providing technical oversight of various environmental programs and environmental conditions on and around the site, and on yearly and cumulative contaminant releases at the site. They may be called upon by other organizations and sites within and outside of the DOE complex. They may co-author technical manuals and publish scientific journal articles, develop technical presentations for both national and international audiences, participate and serve on committees and boards that provide perspectives and technical judgements to DOE and other environmental programs, regulatory organizations, and standard method development/ changes. Other responsibilities include participating in Environmental Justice and Education Outreach STEM programs.

Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include:

SRNS is seeking an analytical instrumentation specialist familiar with multiple instrument types to assist in instrumental installation, procedural standup, laboratory operations development in conjunction with the Savannah River Plutonium Production Facility's analytical measurements laboratories. This position will be hands-on destructive analysis role supporting sample preparation, separations, quantitative analysis by such techniques as ICP-MS, ICP-ES, XRF, and/or interstitials gas analysis. As one of the initial team members, you will have significant input into the lab's method development and operations for this major new site mission.

Primary responsibilities include:
* Utilize general working knowledge in the area of analytical chemistry techniques, and their application to heavy metal systems and actinides to drive instrument installation, lab standup, and data production as part of the larger mission.
* Assist in developing procedural development and testing.
* Works with team and group leadership to meet declared goals, provided customer feedback through data production, and address capability advancement.
* Interface between various disciplines including managers, project management, and engineering as needed.
* Provides mentoring for less-experienced employees.
* Provide assistance in executing solutions to complex problems.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in a scientific or relevant field plus at least two years of experience (YOE) in a relevant role, OR Master's degree in relevant field
* Equivalencies to experience and education requirements will be considered

* Experience in hands-on analytical chemistry efforts with a variety of instrumentation.
* Experience in laboratory design/standup supporting analytical data production efforts.
* Understanding of laboratory waste handling concepts, ideally with experience in radioactive waste generation.
* Experience with Laboratory Information Management System.
* B.S. Degree in Chemistry, Forensics, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
* Previous DOE national laboratory or nuclear weapons production facility experience.
* Active Q clearance.

Security Clearance Information
