GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
As the Senior Collections Manager, in collaboration with the MCRW Conservator and Senior Administrator, you will be responsible for the care and upkeep of the galleries and storerooms of the newly renovated Michael C. Rockefeller Wing (MCRW). The works housed within represent the preeminent collections relating to three distinct areas: sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania, and the Ancient Americas. These consist of over 12,000 archaeological and historic works of art, in a range of organic and inorganic media including wood sculptures with complex surface designs, composite fiber objects, fragile archaeological metals and ceramics, as well as objects with historic repairs. On public display are over 1,700 works of art presented within the newly renovated 40,000 square foot gallery space.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Provides a maintenance plan for the renovated galleries and supervises the department technicians in the cleaning of the permanent galleries so they continue to shine.
- Conducts regular visual checks of works on display in the galleries and coordinates with the conservators for the care of objects.
- Oversee installations of MCRW's special exhibitions and gallery rotations.
- In coordination with the conservator, provides general management and supervision to MCRW's department technicians.
- Organize and oversee the movement of objects within and in between galleries, storerooms and other museum departments.
- Coordinate with conservators/scientists/engineers to monitor and maintain optimal climate and light level conditions in the galleries/storerooms.
- Supervises the department technicians in the maintenance and organization of mounts, bases, and other installation equipment, in addition to occasionally manufacturing simple mounts.
- Coordinate with the department administrator, curators, conservators and special events personnel in the safeguarding of art during departmental or museum special events in the MCRW galleries.
- Coordinate with curators and conservators to provide access to the collection for scholarly study purposes.
- In conjunction with the Collections Manager (Documentation), prepares for the regular inventory spot-check of MCRW's holdings by Registrar's and Director's Office, and coordinates with the conservator and the TMS collections manager in the rolling departmental inventory of works in the collection.
- Coordinate with curators and the Collections Manager (Documentation) for the installation and upkeep of gallery labels and their mounts.
- Coordinate with the conservation, collections, and administrative staff on completion of exhibition and loan documents.
- In tandem with the conservator, maintains the storage and inventory of all installation, emergency, cleaning, and storeroom tools and materials for the department.
- Work with Capital Projects and the exhibition case manufacturer to address and implement outstanding adjustments to galleries.
- Coordinate with the departmental administrator in the maintenance of departmental files for permanent and temporary exhibitions, collection care, education, photography, and long-term loans.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree, with MA in Art History, Museum studies, or Collection Care preferred.
- 5 Years of experience in collections management in a museum or other collection preferred.
- Must have good dexterity, hand-eye coordination, ability to climb and work on ladders for extended periods of time; ability to reach items with hands above shoulder level; ability to safely lift heavy objects and to stand or to walk for a standard workday.
- Demonstratable experience as a proactive self-starter.
- Experience supervising others preferred.
- Ability to prioritize and multitask.
- Excellent organizational, management, and communication skills.
- Formal or on-the-job training and experience in handling, storing and moving 3-dimensional works of art.
- Must have demonstrated ability with hand and simple power tools.
- Ability to create supports and containers for 3-dimensional works of art for loans, storage and display.
- Knowledge of agents of deterioration and the museum environment.
- Excellent computer skills, including TMS, Excel, Word, etc.
- Project portfolio preferred.
COMPENSATION RANGE:
- Pay Range: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00 / Annually

Location Requirements
At time of employment, employees are expected to be located within commuting distance of the Museum. "Commuting distance" means that they are located in one of following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania (the "Tri-state and PA" areas), and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
