This role involves managing latent construction defect claims, as well as a mix of latent bodily injury, employers liability and declaratory relief claims, often in litigation, with minor to severe damages, liability and coverage issues. Provides prompt coverage and claim investigation, evaluation and settlement or denial of claims. Initiates dialog and completes negotiations on cost sharing agreements. Authorizes payments in accordance with assigned authority limit. Documents claim files and electronic reporting systems with all pertinent information and disposition.

What You'll Do:

As an Environmental Claims Specialist, you will manage complex primary and excess environmental contamination, construction defect, latent bodily injury, employer's liability and declaratory relief claims, and more, often in litigation.

  • Verify coverage and investigate losses by gathering pertinent information

  • Evaluate damages, determine liability and set reserves

  • Deny coverage where coverage does not exist

  • Determine if contribution and subrogation potential exists and take steps necessary for establishment of cost shares and recovery

  • Accurately document claims files, capturing and updating relevant data to ensure company and industry compliance.

  • Evaluate , negotiate settlements and pay claims within assigned authority limits

  • Work with selected defense counsel and co-carriers in the investigation and preparation of the defense of the insured

  • Detect potential problems or trends that require additional review, investigation or research and refer to appropriate level for resolution

What It Takes:

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience

  • 5+ years of insurance-related work experience, preferably managing litigated general liability claims, including high-severity cases.

  • Previous insurance experience handling latent liability claims involving environmental contamination, toxic tort and/or construction defects is beneficial

  • Claims litigation experience is preferred

  • Knowledge of current and historic liability insurance policies and coverages, claim payment procedures, and familiarity with medical, scientific, and legal terminology preferred

  • Possess analytical abilities to review, exercise judgement, and evaluate claims to make sound decisions.

  • Able to review and interpret complex and detailed documents such as contracts, medical, expert reports, and insurance regulations

  • Effective oral and written communication skills and human relations skills

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Personal computer, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and math skills beneficial
