Lead Grower-Production

The Lead Grower specializes in all stages of propagation and cultivation of plants (mainly seed and vegetative annuals) during appropriate months; assistance with finished production growing and other duties outside of main young plant propagation periods. Growers are responsible for maintaining the company's horticultural products by cultivating and caring for plants to support retail sales. They follow technical procedures and use timing and metering devices to control the frequency, amount, and type of nutrient applications. This includes regulating environmental factors such as humidity, ventilation, temperature, and light. In addition, they apply and dispense fertilizer and pesticides as needed to ensure plant health and quality.

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Growing all phases of crops from sow/stick to transplant, monitoring and control of the greenhouse environment, fertilization, and nutrition management
• Manage young plant propagation
• Ensure overall plant health and growth through proper care and monitoring
• Crop record keeping
• Integrated Pest Management (Disease/Sanitation/Pesticide application)
• Operate and maintain greenhouse systems and equipment that control growing conditions.
• Take corrective actions to ensure high-quality plants

• Proven ability to analyze operations to identify efficiencies, reduce costs, and implement resource-saving solutions.
• Ability to work with other members of the Growing Team to accomplish and complete tasks
• Proficient in greenhouse systems management
• Proven ability to recognize issues and to quickly identify solutions
• Knowledge of workplace safety practices, chemical handling protocols, and compliance with agricultural and environmental regulations.
• Strong verbal and written communication to lead teams and coordinate across departments.

Requirements

  • Degree in Horticulture or appropriate related field with five years growing experience OR
  • Hands-on experience in greenhouse and field growing in a leadership/decision making capacity
  • Basic computer skills
  • Candidate must be able to work weekends as appropriate
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Ability to move or lift to 40 lbs. or more
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, motivation, organization, and ability to follow-through with tasks and goals
  • Must have proven leadership skills
  • Skilled in both verbal and written communication, ensuring smooth workflow across departments
  • Must be able to obtain a pesticide applicators license within 6 months of hire date.
  • Must be able to work in all environmental conditions.
  • Must be able to travel between multiple sites.
  
  
  
  

Preferred:

  • Bilingual communication skills, specifically Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Associate degree or equivalent experience in greenhouse operations, crop science, or plant biology considered.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team or supervising staff in a production environment.
  
  
  
  

Technology:

• Must be proficient in MS Office
• Comfortable with using software programs such as online meeting tools, inventory software programs, employee management software
• Proficient at using mobile phone, texting, email, and apps
• Operate and maintain greenhouse systems, sensors, and climate control equipment
